In response to Darth Lin's following assertion regarding the origin of writing, I am offering up (as promised) a thread in which to discuss the research he claims below to have conducted.

QUOTE(Darth Lin @ May 23 2006, 07:32 PM)

...scholars can never come to an agreement when people started to use writing to record the history. Since scholars from different countries will just go into a deadlock by saying their own country has the oldest tradition of writing, and saying that others started to use writing later on, while in the meantime if everyone takes unbiased view and read what it said in each other's history, written or oral, they will find out that, most civilizations did start to use writing around 4400~4600 years ago, to do so you need to dig more into ancient histories and cultures, I have done so, and that is what I found.

So here I would like there to be a discussion over the various paths of research Darth Lin claims to have traveled that led him to the conclusion that "most civilizations did start to use writing around 4400~4600 years ago".

I anxiously await Darth's first documented post.

You're a very intelligent guy Skeptic. Now why would you want to engage in debating with Darth Lin? Darth Lin isn't Atl.com, he cannot form coherent debates. He usually doesn't have sufficient knowledge on the subjects he wants to engage in. It's a waste of time. I've read enough of his posts to come to this conclusion. In fact when he gets stumped he engages in trivial insults to the person he's trying to debate in.

Ah here's one of my favorite threads and his brainless followers. Why do East Asians have highest IQ in the World?

Notice he doesn't address how come the West/Europe has produced geniuses like Newton, Galileo, Maxwell, Einstein, Telsa, Edison, Heisenberg, Bohr, Da Vinci, Watt, Darwin, Decartes, Kepler, etc. And he doesn't even address the question of why the West has completely established an hegemony in science and technology beginning with the European Reannaisance in the 15th century. In fact instead of answering these questions he completely insults the guy that raises these questions.

^ Well, jose, it's specifically because Darth avoids providing responses to direct questions that I opened this thread. I've noticed the tendency you point to and I decided it was time to try and force him to substantiate his assertions regarding one of the many subjects he writes about with such "authority." I found his assertion regarding the "digging" he's done into ancient cultures and the conclusion he drew from this research that "most" of the ancient civilizations developed writing around the same few centuries 4,000 years ago quite bold, in face of the article I posted for him to the contrary.

So, rather than call him a liar and dismiss his claim, I'd like to provide him --front and center-- the opportunity to document his assertion. I'm willing to learn something here I didn't know before and if Darth can come through with the goods, I'm willing to listen.

Forgive me for bumping, Jaimu, but I've a feeling Darth may have missed this thread. I'm sure he'd be anxious to make a reply if he saw it again. After all, he did say in the now-closed topic regarding the proof of God's existence, "Don't act like you have won a battle, or I'll be back on your tails!" He doesn't strike me as the kind of fellow who would run from a challenge. icon_wink.gif

I would really like him to substantiate his claim that "most civilizations did start to use writing around 4400~4600 years ago" based upon all that digging into "ancient histories and cultures" he claimed to have done.

I think Darth Lin is ignoring your thread. biggrin.gif

Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn!!!

I saw the topic at the top if the page and I thought, "Finally! Darth's going to answer the question!"

I should have known better...

I don't want his guts. I want all that research his "digging" brought up that seems to have escaped the actual experts in the field regarding the origins of writing in the various ancient civilizations of the world. Much like his criticisms of Hawkings, ol' Darth just seems to be a wealth of knowledge far and above the brightest in the fields of general science, biology, theology, cosmology, paleography and philology. He's an amazing guy and I'd like to drink from his well of wisdom! embarassedlaugh.gif

The first civilization in the world was Sumer. They existed about 5500 years ago. They left thousands of records of scientific accomplishments that dwarf many of even modern day scienfitic accomplishments. For instance, they knew of the existence of a tenth planet in our solar system, something that modern day scientists did not know until 2 years ago.

There is evidence that Egypt may have also had earlier forms of writing. It is not clear. Either way it is Egypt or Sumer.

Sumerians spoke an Altaic language, and were most likely Asian. According to the bible, and Sumerian literature, Sumerians came from the East and settled in modern day Iraq.

They "knew" this, huh? Like they knew about Marduk?

Thanks for the distraction, three, but I'm really looking for Darth's contribution to the thread. I want to see this research he "dug" up.

I think the origin is when cave men first started drawing in the snow while urinating. Hmmm I could be wrong because I am guessing here. laugh.gif
