House for sale - only strict vegetarians need apply

Meat eaters are being excluded from housing estates in Mumbai, long considered India's most liberal city, because of their diets. Middle-class Indians from neighbouring Gujarat and Rajasthan, strongly vegetarian states, have been attracted to Mumbai's booming economy and set up housing associations which proscribe those who succumb to the temptations of steaks, chops, sausages and kebabs.

Estate agents report that even when higher offers are made by carnivorous clients they are rejected in favour of those who do not eat meat.

Mumbai's living costs make it the most expensive city in India, with three-bedroom apartments in the suburbs costing more than £250,000.

Rejected house buyers have tried taking the housing societies that discriminate on grounds of diet to court but judges have not ruled in their favour.

In India, there is no bar to forming an association and making an apartment block, for example, exclusively Catholic or Hindu. Vegetarians say they too need segregation.

"I live in a cosmopolitan society," Jayantilal Jain, trustee of a charity group told agencies.

"But vegetarians should be given the right to admit who they want."

India has some 220 million vegetarians, the highest number in any country, and it is a deeply entrenched custom among some Hindus and strict Jains.

As a result fast food outlets such as McDonald's do not serve beef or pork in India and Kentucky Fried Chicken faced protests when it opened its newest store in Mumbai.

This kind of discrimination also happens here in Kenya where Hindu landlords who are strict vegetarians try to forbid their tenants to have barbecues by the swimming pool...

They have explained that it's due to their religion as well as some kinda spiritual cleanliness not to come into contact with meat-eating folks and places which are considered by them to be polluted and undesirable elements.

Should such a concept of mental and physical purity continue to exist?

Someone should show this to these people

QUOTE(Manusmriti Chapter 5 Verse 30)

"The eater can eat any creature that lives - even if he eats everyday;our Creator created some creatures to eat, and some to be eaten".

QUOTE(Manusmriti Chapter 5 Verse 35)

"You can have meat".

QUOTE(Rigveda Vol. 10 Hymn 16 Verse 10)

"You can have meat".

In Mahabharat "Anushashan Parva" Chapter 88 Bhisma gives a advice to Hridhistar, which is also mentioned in Manusmriti Chapter No 3 Verse 266-272
"If you want to please your ancestors, give them herbs and shrubs and you'll gratify them for a month. If you give them fish, for two months. If you give them the flesh of deer, for three months. If you give them mutton, for four months. If you give them flesh of a bird for five months. If you give them goat meat for six months. If you give them spotted Deer, for seven months. If you give them meat of a black antelope for eight months. If you give Cow, you'll gratify them for a full year.If you give bull, twelve years and if you give rhinoceros and red meat of goat, for ever!!!

What does this mean ??? Non-vegetarian food is allowed in Hinduism, someone who eats only vegetarian food is not purer than someone who does not.

Manu smriti is not a religious text.

Vegetarianism is mandatory for certain Indian groups (usually the more civilized ones). Meat eating is allowed for Animals and Barbarians (who are considered only one step away from animals. Vanars (the race of Monkey-Humans) are also allowed to eat certain types of meat because they are also part animal. Rakshasa (demons) usually consume meat also. Asuras often consume it too. Coastal Indian groups usually eat fish which is allowed for them.

Vegetarianism depends on the Indian group you belong to. Anybody from any group (high standing or low) that wishes to live a dharmic life MUST adopt a vegetarian lifestyle.

Hey Lilbuggy, this is not a crusade against Hinduism. As a yoga student, I love the study of yoga sutras and classics which have formed the basis of modern day Hinduism.

What the article is highlighting is about how some extremists could discriminate other Hindu folks whom they consider as pollutants all in the name of spiritual cleanliness. Every religious order have their fanatics. Maybe such a fact hurts but a mind of extreme purity is pretty dangerous too.

BTW, I am not a guy.
