one word WESTERNIZATION

Not really. They're not getting white eyes, they're getting larger Asian eyes.

Simple answer:They don't like them

Not necessarily...

They just want to look better that's all. No crime in that.

THroughout Asian history (even before Caucasian influence) large, pretty eyes were an object of beauty.

AND plastic surgery aka a way to change the way you look wasn't really around either back then.

again, you don't know what you are talking about. if you look at the makeup for Chinese opera characters, the female characters put their makeup on a way that makes their noses look taller.

That's because the technology wasn't really available. People can change these things now so why wouldn't they want to?

I suppose there is a connection to the west in that they were the catalyst that brought about the modernization of Japan, but that's all. It's not the western aesthetic.

They also couldn't have changed their eyes if they wanted to or not. Just because the definition of what they like or find beautiful now and then does not mean it was because of influence from the west.

For example. Why is "skinny" in now when "fat" used to be the definition of beauty [due to wealth, ability to eat well, etc.] in the West? Did they get it from the East? Or is it just the evolution of society?

That historical source's usefulness and reliability is in question...u'll need some better historical evidence to justify and solidify your viewpoint.

My friends mom wanted her to get eyelid surgery because she "wanted her to look more Western". She's Chinese though.

but the thing is that the painter DID NOT pick NO BIG eyes japanese women to model for them ( i am sure that there r big eyes japanese ... natural of course ...esp in okinawa<<< i heard those people there have big eyes naturally) ..... that shows that back then japanese people don't really care much about big eyes and also ..... the west did not copy the east when they change their views about fat women because back then "fat " was also consider beautiful in asia as well embarassedlaugh.gif

look at how she applies on makeup to make her nose look taller. Chinese opera actresses have been doing that for a long time. taller noses and larger eyes were always seen as attractive.

I didn't not say that the West copied the East.

My point was that it is the evolution of the definition of beauty, the evolution of society. Eye shape, size, body shape, size, etc.

Lol. All these pictures and speculation isn't enough evidence...
StephenDedalusFromAsia
because the female leads of Chinese operas are suppose to be stunning beauties, and that's how they apply on makeup to give them the features of a stunning beauty.

Exactly! What I would like to see are some reliable primary sources!

Chinese opera represents ideal beauty? No way, then that means every Chinese woman should walk around with 5 gallons of makeup on her face. laugh.gif

Although I agree with the big eyes and taller noses part, just opera might not be particularly reflecting that aspect though, since traditionally female roles were played by males.

She's contouring her nose to make it seem narrower and taller. You do this by applying a highlight shade on the center and darker shades along the sides to create illusions of shadows.

why can't everybody just be happy with what they were born with.
