well. im back from my trip. beerchug.gif from ny that is. here are some things i noticed comparing to chicago while i was over there:

- nyc appears a lot dirtier in general than chicago. doesn't mean it actually is dirtier. but chicago appears to have more dumpsters and alleys to store the trash while in nyc, even in nice places like the "village", there's trash bags on the corners and on the sidewalks. also in downtown.

- central park was nice~ chicago's equivalent: lake shore drive/millenium park? i guess confused.gif

- nyc seems to be more integrated than chicago. in a lot of places in chicago, you know actually when you're going into another part of town, etc. the suburbs in chicago look really different from the city. while i was taken around manhatten, around central park, a lot of the areas seemed to flow into each other.

- a lot more traffic and honking in nyc bawling.gif chicago has its share of it also. but nyc streets seem more complicated and packed. and people crossing the streets at anytime makes it difficult to drive around. my friend was driving and i couldn't believe how they cutting, crossing, and sayng that its ny thing embarassedlaugh.gif

- nyc has a lot of neat little shops and restaurants . more than chicago.

- it seems more stylish in nyc.

- Times Square at night is great! i don't know if Chicago has something like that.

- i personally think chicago has a better skyline

-new york has more old streets and landmarks/monuments/etc. i guess a lot of it due to the Great Fire in Chicago.

- both by the water. but Chicago utilizes it more by having a lot of boat trips, cruise boats, speed boats so that citizens can access. i didn't see much by the water when i was taken to the pier in nyc

- nyc people seem more rude than chicagoans (well to me that is) bawling.gif embarassedlaugh.gif

- nyc downtown nightlife seems more lively than chicago downtown nightlife.

- lots of Duane Reade's in nyc. equivalent in chicago=walgreens or cvs confused.gif

- parking seems to suck more so in nyc. every spot has a sign saying restrictions or you having to pay at some place.

=========
every restaurant/diner i went to seemed to be pretty good. i also ate at mambo sushi, Le Pain (which i really liked)..

went to Lincoln Center? it had a lot of tents open up of handmade stuff. but starting prices were about $250. uh i don't think im gonna pass on the $750 glass bowl.

the puerto rican and jewish parade was happening while i was there. didn't get to see it though.

3/5 stars experience. i'm going back in august. biggthumpup.gif

Chicago has a lot of little shops and restaurants, you just need to be a real Chicagoan and know where to go. biggthumpup.gif

People like me, who live most of my life in the suburbs, don't know much of where to go in Chicago besides Mich. Ave. and the big touristy hits.

I went to NY last spring break. It was nice. I love Soho! It's an amazing place to walk around and relax and shop in.

And I completely agree about the garbage bags all over the streets. It gives the impression of dirtiness.

i was in soho a lot too. chicago DOES have a lotta little shops that are really cute. but in nyc i saw them all over the place while in chicago i have to go to bucktown, lincoln park, boystown, etc to get those unique little stores. although i think nyc is dirtier and smellier, i liked the variety it has. chicago's magnificent mile is amazing for shopping and nice looking. but they have a lot of big company stores and i wanna see more unique ones.

it seems like a lot of nyc seemed very similar while i think chicago has more distinctions in their areas.
Boku_WA!
tokyo would own both places shifty.gif

Never been to NYC, but Chicago I think is a lot easier to navigate downtown, and a lot of places are more distinctive than others.

What do you do in Boystown. shifty.gif

Went down there once. Didn't know it was Boystown, and some guy asked if I wanted to have a good time. icon_redface.gif When I checked where I was, I swore never to go back there again. Except when my friend wanted to go to Guitar Center and it was on the outskirts of Boystown, but I forgot where to get off, ended up in Boystown again. My god, those guys sure like to wave and wink -_-". I swear I'm never going there for a third time.

my friend's family lived there and operated a business there. so i went all the time. i heard it was normal until maybe 1:00 am. shifty.gif you could tell you're there when you see a place called "GAY GAMES". whatever that is embarassedlaugh.gif

yeah. i can understand why i absolutely freaking hated being in the passenger seat as my friend drove me around. everyone honking like it was nothing. and i can understand why there might not be alleyways. i guess to preserve space do to overcrowding. but i guess thats what i like about chicago. a lot cleaner but still lively. but i liked all the restaurants and diners i went to in nyc. sometimes its a hit or miss in chicago. but i still know a lot of good restaurants in chicago. but i wanna go back to nyc for central park <3

There is a place called Gay Games? I heard the Gay Games were held in Chicago, but now there is an actual place for it. I'm not going anywhere near there. Seriously my friend didn't know where we were and I explained it to him, and he went, "OMG, were in gay town!!!" just imagine the whole block turn around, and smile at you queerly.

I'll pass Talktohand.gif
I know a classmate of mine goes there for bongs, and I always throw gay jokes at him, and I joked about the fact that he bought a bong for boystown. In other words, I instigated the fact he bought a c@ck bong laugh.gif (dam I can't tell a joke). All I know is that anything weird and bizarre you can get around the Belmont area, anything from bongs, piercings, tattoos, eccentric/emo/gothic styles, and sex toys. -_-" I get most of this info from the radio.

my friends place/business is on belmont and racine i think. but i definitely did see that place. its in big white letters on a black building. it has nice restaurants and stuff there. just that at 1 am, a lot of transexuals come out is all. but i heard they were very nice biggrin.gif don't ask me how i know shifty.gif but its lively there and has good restaurants/cafes.

i like NYC b/c it has five distinct boroughs in the city alone. makes it really interesting b/c every borough has it's own accent and they'r proud of being from certain areas...

toronto has 5 boroughs as well and we use it to distinguish ourselves from other people from the t dot but it's not the same. lol.

I duno which one is better. I prefer the suburbs.

We get emails from our school regarding students getting mugged or attacked. icon_neutral.gif

And some are at 3pm...

New York seriously needs to rework its metro system. It's fu-king hilarious that I have to move between the cars just to get off. And Times Square was a huge disappointment for me. Nothing to do after 3AM.

As for Chicago, horrendous suburbs. Absolutely horrendous. Maybe it's my bad experience with a particularly bad hostel out in the suburbs, but it's way too rundown and destitute for my standards(i.e. Orange County suburbs). My travelmate ended up running away to a luxurious hotel downtown while I slept in that $hithole for two nights to stay on budget. I had to take some Baccardi 151 to help me sleep. And this is not mentioning the crime around Chicago suburbs that I was aware of. New York City implemented a state-of-the-art crime prevention system which made NYC a relatively safe city.

Regardless, Chicago was a better visit than NYC. Better museums and skyline.

what suburb you went to. i love the suburbs too. since i lived there most. highland park is really nice. its where michael jordan lives. you should go there one day beerchug.gif

It was somewhere southwest of Chicago, if I remember correctly. It definitely wasn't up north. That place was really a $hithole. I wouldn't have stayed there if not for my adventurous spirit of the times. I would rather stay in those panjachons in Seoul than to stay there again.

southwest? eek.gif maybe thats naperville area. but seriously go to places like : Winnetka and Wilmette. they have nice beaches there, quiet and pretty. beautiful area, nice shops. glenview and northbrook is where a lot of koreans are. i used to live there also. go the THe Glen. but chicago isn't like korea where there is a lot of 24 hour places. the city is usually better for that. there are some all night noraebangs and some korean restuarants . the other 24 hour restaurants are not good though.
SantaKlaws
I don't go to suburbs unless I can find cheap shelter there. They don't offer much to tourists.
chynagongju
I like my suburb area. Even though I'm like 3240983 miles away from everything. cry2.gif
toki
suburbs are nice to live in and stuff. but hella boring. everything closes early. like wtf. schaumburg has woodfield mall. at least in glenview i had access to old orchard which was like 15 minutes away. and the Glen.
toki
where do you live, clover? besides pakistan?
