You're right. 5'5 is not tall at ALL, but I've had people tell me "Oh. You're pretty tall for an Indian girl. Most of them are 4'11." Whatever.





That's the first time I've heard that from someone.

actually it depends..,,bengalis., sauth indians n north east indians r short in stature.....

while punjabis r tallest followed by haryanvis...kashmiris n rajasthanis....

most of the indian girls i know are between 5'3" and 5'6", and most of the indian guys in know are around 5'11" to 6'00"...although i know there r a lot of really tall indian girls, like 5'9", and i know a lot of indian guys that are like 6'2" to 6'5"....but on average, the heights i mentioned first are the ones i usually see.

I'm not trying to start a fight, but I would have to disagree with that.


If you want to generalize, there are certain communities within each nationality you mentioned, who have varying heights.


For instance, some Punjabi sub-sects are known to be short, while another particular Punjabi sect is known to be tall.

punjabi from majha region r tallest n biggest of all.....i have seen that guy dilip singh in person...he is from jallundhar....punjabis around amritsar r tallesrt n heavily built.....punjabis who migrated from pakistan during partition r known to be weakest n shortest.....

What I meant was that specifically Jatts are known to have a higher proportion of taller people ON AVERAGE.

But if you look at the Punjabi Aroras (Aroras, Grovers, Ahujas, etc), it's common for them to be short. My dad is an Arora, and people assume that he's some big great Aryan hulk when I tell people that he's Punjabi.

LOL, he's only 5'7 and even has brothers are that are 5'3.

Rajputs in Rajasthan are reputed for being tall, but the Rajasthani Marwaris and the Bhils are stereotyped to be short.

The Rajputs and Jats in Haryana/UP are known to be tall, but there are certain Haryanavi and UP castes that are known to be short.

Get my drift?

These are just broad generalizations based on what I've seen and heard. Basically, you can find a tall Indian anywhere.

i work with lot of whites n my fellow punjabis.....white dudes keep asking me y we r so tall ? .. i think its because of our diet.....to be honest i have seen few gujus or rajasthanis who r tall.. usually they r near abt five feet 8 mark......

LOL, that's where you live. I can say the same thing about Punjabis, since most of our family friends are Punjabis.

What do you mean by "your diet?" Sweetie, Punjabis aren't the only one who eat meat, if that's what you mean.

People got to realize that certain sects tend to be largely vegetarian, such as Gujaratis and Rajasthani Brahmins. But, meat-eating is common among Biharis, UPites, Uttaranchalis, Malu Hindus, Rajasthani Rajputs, and probably more....Some Malu Hindus in India even eat beef.

But there are cases where a vegetarian can be tall. My brother and grandfather are vegetarians, and they're 6'4. That could be just a case of genetics though. Height can depend on a lot of things and can vary.

I'm sure a lot of Punjabis are tall, but I just don't see why it has to be limited to them only?

He's either an Arora or a Khatri. Short people aren't rare in those particular Punjabi communities.

EDIT: When you mean Punjabi, are you only talking about Sikhs?

I'm talking about Hindu Punjabis, Muslim Punjabis, and Sikhs when I say Punjabi.

I was talking about Punjabis as a whole, because there are tons of Muslim Punjabis in Pakistan. Many Hindus also trace their roots to Punjab, but I think a lot of the Hindu Punjabis spread out to the Haryana/Delhi area.

Punjab is currently 60% Sikh, right?

For the record, my daddy is a Hindu Punjabi. He's from Delhi, but his family was from Lahore before the partition.

i think u have never been to punjab......thats y u dunno who r bamans...lol...its so common there...lol....hindu punjabis r a bit shorter n skinnier that jatts because they dont eat meat.... n usually live in polluted environment of cities....probably now u got the answer y ur dad is short ...even though he is punjabi..

n those punjabis who migrated from pakistani during partition r shorter ...... they r not called jaddi punjabis...

No, I haven't been to Punjab. My dad's family is in Delhi and Bombay, and mom's family is in UP and Rajasthan. That's where I go when we visit India.

And since my mom isn't Punjabi, she only knows Hindi. So, my dad has to talk in Hindi with her only. There's a lot of Punjabi terms that I don't know.

i was born in amritsar.... i recently migrated to toronto from punjab ( like 4 years ago).....thats y my english is crappy...lol

wow, a lot of tall people on this forum. A lot of Indians in India are actually meant to be shorter than Western based Indians from what I hear. I guess thats the case in general in Asia, as in most Asian countries people are generally smaller than those in the West.

Personally, I'm 5ft8 or 5ft9, which I guess is fairly short for a guy here in the UK, but I'm comfortable with it.

most of the really tall guys i know are malayalis, and they're all 6'2" and taller. most of the rajput rajasthanis i know are really short.

but i really think height is genetic, so it depends on the family. i know a lot of indian parents that are considered short, but have really tall kids. supposedly height usually skips a generation.

Am i reading this correctly, Malyalis are always like 5-0'' to 5-5'' I have never seen a malyali girl taller then 4-10'', many many oif them work as nurse in hospitals in north India and malyali guys, are not such tall as you write. Whereas Rajput community have many taller person, Maybe you have seen more India then me. I havent been to both these places either. I wonder.

i was talking about the malayalis in new york, chicago, and texas...most of the are really tall...and the same goes for the girls...it's probably different in india, as i've never been to kerala. from what i've seen in the states, i've seen more tall malayalis than short ones. you're right though, most ppl think they're short, so i guess there are a lot of short malayalis too.

The tallest Indian girl I've seen was a Malyali Hindu. She was 6'1. It ran in her family too.


Yeah, there are tons of short Rajputs, whether they are from Rajasthan, UP, or Bihar.


But, they are just generally assumed to be taller b/c of the warrior genes...I guess?




That's the thing though. A lot of people don't fit their stereotype. There are millions of people in India...so it's very easy to find exceptions.

i might be wrong .. but i have never seen any tall malyali in my life.....rajputs might be tall but i havent seen many..so i cant say anything....overall tallest indians r punjabis......average height of punjabis is near five feet 11......where as average height of whole of indian is about five feet 7 something....

There are some considerably tall Malu actresses/models.

Some of those Bollywood "Punjabis" are either half or part South Indian, like Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta and Malaika Arora.

I don't if it's true, but I recently heard that Juhi Chawla was half-Gujarati from her mom's side.

yea priyanka chopra look exactly like a south indian gurl.....but mallika arora n juhi chawla dont look south indian at all.....anyways have ya ever been to chandigarh......u will find better looking gurls than these so called actresses in chandigarh......they cant act in movies because their parents r strict.....

Well i guess is Bollywood WAS dominated by panjabis, not now, now only all barbers and terrorists, Yeah thats teur, there are many panjabis but they are not at all dominating, productive/directive crew is not at all big mass of panjabis, there was an era when Rajkapoor,Devanand, etc most of onscreen and offscreen were panjabis but not any more dominated, yeah marathis and others are much much more then panjabis now.
