Mainly talking about NYC (5 boroughs)...does anyone feel that the younger asian generations are becoming so "wannabe's"....i mean, they are all talking, acting, dressing etc....like blacks/whites hiphop styles??? Dont get me wrong, I have nothing against any races/ethnics.

I am in the mid-20's (not too old right??), but seems like these younger generations cant even speak chinese anymore. And the thing that bugs me the most is that their attitudes seems to resent asian people. The way I see it is that they feel ashame or embarass of being who they are....theres a chinese saying "my cort tak" (country traitor)....Guess I'm just old school thinking

lets here some opinions

i dont see how they're resenting asians when all they're doing is hanging out with other asian wannabes

yeah its natural for the younger generations to assimilate with the culture

I agree.

The problem, however, lies with how society views Asian. Simply put, we are not view positively by society at large. It's not hip to be Asian. It's not cool be be Asian. Asians are goody-two-shoes. We're all computer geeks and we never cause any trouble because we are the model minority. The problem is this is how society views us.

This, in turn, is the reason why our younger generation want to disassociate themselves from their Asian heritage. Being young and hip is a huge part of being young.

We cannot blame the young for acting how they are. They are simple a product of society.

I do, however, agree that it is silly to see an Asian guy in a durag or talking ebonics or in any other way, acting like someone they are not.

And that is the truth. It is an act, and it is not who they are. Simply, it is who they wish they could be because they do not want to be themselves. It's sad, but I think they eventually will realize how silly it is (society is not very accepting of them as 'wannabes' either).

I dont understand some of your logics and excuses for excusing the young asians. Its not excusable because if you compare them to hispanic kids who can speak fluent latin with little problem speaking english at the same time. I so far have two kids, my eldest (5yrs old) speaks his mother tongue fluently. I promote our own nationality first and then the adopted one for whenever.

I will tell the kids its ok to be different, its good to be proud of who they are and who they represent. That they can be who they are without any embarrasment nor fear of who they are, that they deserve those same rights as any other race that live in the states or any other. That its also cool to be unique. That they dont need to be with the "IN" crowd to be accepted. That "If you cant join em, BEAT EM".

I think a lot of it has to do with parenting, we should try to better ourselves to help and guide the young ones and to help them understand, its not all about making masses amounts of money, but envoking the old traditional home values but with some modernity. If parents dont stop the rot then being an asian is as good being toilet roll. Lets do some self preservation.

asian kids these days, they're so self-concerned about being an image so other people can accept them. If they're not part of the crowd, then who are they? kids in the corner?
We gotta teach them some sense of pride
