It's a controversial issue. The Russians that are depicted in stereotypes are the european ones and the majority of Russians live on the western side of Russia or atleast that's what I assume, but nonetheless there are Russians that look Asian, so you can't really place Russia towards one continent. It's half European and Half Asian.. deal with it.

Russians are not really Northern European, they are Eastern European, or Slavic to be more specific. Slavs were never considered Nordic (despite their Nordic features). In fact, many Slavs were killed in the Holocaust because of that reason.

I don't think it works that way. Russians have caucasoid features, as do a lot of middle eastern and central asians. I consider South Asia, SEA, and East Asia, the real asians. The ones with the mongoloid features and asian cultures. Russians have culture similar to europe.

A majority of Central Asians do have some Mongoloid features (but many don't). A majority of South Asians don't have Mongoloid features (but many do).
"Asian" is a difficult term to define because it has different meanings in different countries and different time periods:
-Asians were Middle Easterners & Central Asians according to the ancient Greeks & Romans.
-Asians are Eastern & South-Eastern Asians according to Americans & Australians.
-Asians are Southern Asians according to Europeans & Africans.
On the other hand, Russia was never really considered an Asian country until quite recently.

russia's position is quite complicated actually. for centuries most of the europeans considered russia as a orientalist country, because back then russia had just broke out of the mongol rule, and it's institutions and its political system was quite different and thus considred "foreign" or asian. that's why hitler disliked the russians so much, because despite of their features, he thought russians were contaminated by asian blood.

alright, i beleive i am the only russian here.
i think i need to say what i think about this, even though i can be wrong
well.... if you would ask an average russian person, is he european or asian, he or she (after thinking for a while) would say probably european, but beleive me the first thought would be: i am russian
on the other hand most of russian territory is located in so-called asian region, not much in europe, however i do agree that russia is classified as europe-maybe because more people live on european side.
but i won't say that our culture and some traditions are strictly western. family values, child raising "techniques", education system are very very similar to the asian one. i guess one of the many reasons could be that russia was occupied by mongolian tribes for a long long time.
well, as for me (who is really into asian culture!) i would love to be born asian--i guess this comment is a bit out of topic, i just really waned to emphasize the fact itself.
i would say russians are more asian than european in terms of national character, values, etc. but not in terms of appeareance (even though there are people living with asian look), and un standards.
actually WE ARE RUSSIANS (*proud)

Friend my interactions with Russians have been very friendly. They show great respect to India and say Sanskrit is the mother. On a history forum I even came across a Serbian guy who says Slavs originated from India.I said fine.
Why not invite all Slavs to be a part of this forum?
If I as an Indian am allowed to be a part of this forum then why not Russians? Most of them are my linguistic cousins.
As far as right wingers are concerned...they are present in all Nations. There are plenty on this forum too.

please don't generalize! all russians are rasist... as you said, as you come to moscow-well that's european part of russia. nothing similar happens in the other regions. we do have skinheads, who attack black and asian people-i would say that's the biggest problem right now. however they not only attack asians, but also other russians. does this mean they are rasist to russians?
