TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Japan and the United States have agreed to deploy advanced Patriot interceptor missiles on U.S. bases in Japan for the first time, officials said Monday, amid concerns North Korea may test-fire a long-range ballistic missile.

Well where would N Korea aim their missiles? Most likely at Military bases. If the goverment of Japan wants Patriots for defence of cities they know where to buy them . LOL.

1.) The Patriot Missile doesn't destroy an incoming missile. It can, however, destroy guidance systems, rudders or with luck, the warhead. Most of the time (see Saudi Arabia, Jan. 1991) the warhead and the fuel lands to the ground with sometimes catastrophic result.

2.) Patriots are the last defense to an incoming missile. The Patriots are originally created to deflect medium sized tactical mobile-launched missiles, not ICBMs. NK is using ICBM technology on a prepared platform. Basically, it is big.

3.) The quarrel of North Korea is with Japan. They are using that hatered thinking that they can arouse nationalism in the south by sending a missile to an old enemy. The problem is, the rest of the world moved on, while NK is still backwards.

4.) If they are to target a US military target, they don't need to go very far, since there are plenty of bases in South Korea. They are targeting Japan, in general, yes, the average Joe.

The deployment of Patriots is a sign of solidarity, military muscle, and comittment of the US to defend Japan. So be grateful.

Japan can't respond with several thousand heavy artilleries in the border though, or a bunch of tactical aircrafts.

Since they are talking about Patriots for the first time, it's probably the PAC-3 ELINT missiles, designed to directly impact the incoming warhead and disable the missile. Japanese Patriot systems are PAC-2 type, I think upgraded PAC-2 GEM? They do have much better chances of destroying a ballistic missiles than Gulf War I Patriots due their their better guidance systems.

However, the joker will probably the 2 USN AEGIS destroyer and cruiser deployed with several initial batches of the SM-3 intercept missiles loitering somewhere in the East Sea. Should North Koreans truly go mad and fire missile at Japan, these ships will be the primary line of defense.

Amen. Don't forget the submerge Trident (Polaris & Poseidon) missile nuclear submarines (Ohio class). they aren't busy in the Persian Gulf, and US would not hasitate, if ever NK decides to send a nuke toward Japan. The deployment of Patriots is more for show than a tactical advantage. Japan and US will always have the edge in that region.

No because the united states do not want to be on the same ground with japanese. NK already knows if it does something stupid, the US will take the regime down. The U.S.A Nuclear umbrella is there and will be there for a long time.
