so ive read all the stuff on the net (basic) about kimono, yadda yada - different kinds.
and i cant for the life of me fathom HOW HOW HOW an authentic new kimono has to cost thousands of dollars. wtf?!
i know there's all the parts, and the obi and blah blah everything. but it STILL doesnt make sense.. is it all laced with gold and diamonds or sth?! silk can't be THAT expensive..even top of the line O_O
and it cant just be the labor/skills put into making it alone..cos godamn!
and no im not talking about cheap stuff like the yukata things~
u look at other asian costumes..no, like traditional costumes in general - and none of them (to my knowledge) come close to thousands of dollars for a single costume

There are few actual kimono makers anymore. They're expensive because they're products of a dying art.

Exoticness has nothing to do with it. The people buying real, high quality kimono are Japanese, foreigners settle for cheap robes and yukata.

Yeah i'd probally say it is because of the silk and the dying art stuff.... it's not like there's kimono factories

but we own a kimono at my house and I know we didn't spend 10,000 dollars on it. but I don't remember how much. it's actually my parents' and it's been around since I was born.

Because they're usually custom-made, and the tailors usually demand high price

Look at it this way, if you were to make a kimono (which took you years to learn how to, and some time to make) how much would you sell it for?

trust me , a nuclear war is much more expensive. you wouldn't even imagine
Those Kimonos you see in Japanese popular culture are just another brand of Kimonos. If you ever get a chance to visit rural Japan, most farm ladies wear very simple kimonos that are realtively cheap to make.
Kimonos/Yukatas you see in festivals are the beautiful ones created by highly skilled/trained artisans. Hand-made, not factory made, therefore the price is high...

I'm taking your guys' word for it. but rather than charge 10,000 - 20,000 dollars for a single kimono you'd think they'd preserve it by pouring money into kimono-making schools or sth

which i'm sure exist..but still

just compare it to any other traditional cloth. the price doesn't come close.
i've done a little more reading around and I think the biggest deal is that true authentic kimono are made without any machines whatsoever or modern technology. btu still..20,000 dollars!!!!!!!!! that's a car right there.
then again these kimonos are never thrown away and are used in a person's entire life.

It also takes a year to make one, talking about the colorful and very detailed kimonos of course. After all the time it takes and the silk or expensive fabrics put into one, you have to expect it to be costly. High quality will go for high prices. The rarity could also be a factor since people hardly wear one now.
