Racial discrimination in jobs still exist though it's much better than it used to be because there're better laws against it and people have become more open minded to ethnic minorities. Also it may depends on the type of jobs you're going into, where discriminations in certain industries can be more common than others.

Yes, because we are 'lucky' that this plot was discovered. Though I think they have since found out many inaccuracies in the supposed story line.
