Titik Pilipino Album Review by Resty Odon
I’m not a big fan of divas, but discovering Jonalyn Viray feels like I need to make an act of contrition. I’m simply blown away by the vocal range and delivery of someone so new and small-sized as this fresh girl on the block, the winner of GMA 7’s Pinoy Pop Superstar singing contest. From what depths does she pull her wide scale of notes and emotions? One can’t help but ask.
Jonalyn’s voice may not be distinctive enough to drown out the rest of the competition-- an entire ocean of more-than-able divas and wannabes. But she’s certainly one of the best among the emerging pop divas -- as the evidence (this debut album) clearly suggests.
Even with a repertoire of love songs that sound alike, she manages to hold the listener’s interest. It must be because she’s able to hit stratospheric notes without chafing at the our pain threshold. With the right pitch and a comparably polished edge, this girl warbles like a real songbird should.
Her covers of slowed-down rearrangements of It Might Be You and Get Here are surprisingly low-key, they tend to camouflage the diva lurking behind the diminutive frame. But that’s okay. The thing is, Jonalyn is just starting out, and yet she’s already up there. No less than the show’s host Regine Velasquez pronounces Jonalyn worthy of belting it out next to her.
In an apparent homage to the reigning queen, a couple of tracks here (# 7 and 10) have snippets of Regine-style vocal acrobatics. The bonus music video of her carrier single Close to Where You Are provides a good glimpse of Jonalyn’s winning moment for those who may have missed it.
