Hinduism vs Zulu: Hindu - Zulu Tradition - Many Similarities
By Edward Malinga

Hindu-Zulu Tradition: Many Similarities

In the past centuries, colonialism threatened local traditions and cultures. There is a similar situation today with increasing globalisation. The trend is towards homogeneity.

So, in a shrinking world, keeping alive ancient traditions and cultures is a daunting task - and this effort is necessary to enable future generations to benefit from the rich, indigenous wisdom of our past.

In birds, only three are active, whereas insects have only agni or fire and vayu or air, while the vegetable kingdom has only jal or water. Human beings and their spiritual dimension points to the probability that we are made in the image of the universal spirit or Creator.

Each of the five elements has signified something in the performance of our cultures and customs. Be it in the performance of rites, rituals, sacraments or sanskaras, one or more of the five elements are used. For whether you are using wood or fire, water or oil, the elements are ever present.

There are some striking similarities between the African and Indian cultures. Hinduism has 16 sanskaras , which guide the human being or soul from conception to birth and from birth to death.

In the journey of life the sanskaras or sacraments could be regarded as signboards indicating the direction that must be taken at each stage. In Sanskrit, sanskara means purifying or refining.

Every person wishes to see his or her child grow up to be a person who is cultured and of good character - free from the five passions of lust, anger, greed, over-attachment to material things, and vanity or egoism.

In the Zulu tradition, each sacrament is referred to as usiko and they vary from family to family. When the child reaches a certain stage in life, an usiko for that stage has to be performed. These rites play a crucial role in the health and wealth of a Zulu family.

In both Hindu and Zulu cultures religion and culture have become inseparable. You cannot talk of culture without implying religion; and you can't talk of religion amongst the Zulus and the Hindus without implying culture.

It is said that the Hindu scriptures, particularly the Vedas, have a holistic approach to life. Ayurvedic healing is an art of alternative medicine that was first documented in the Vedas. In the African community, traditional herbal medicine is similar to ayurveda and unlike allopathy - only homoeopathy is in the same league.

The Hindu reverence for the cow has a striking parallel in Zulu culture. Renowned Zulu poet and writer, the late Dr Wallet B Vilakazi, in his work Noma Nini describes a traditional Zulu wedding. While writing at length about this wedding, he remarks: "There is a mysterious spiritual link between the African and the cow. African generations to come will have to do some research on this."

There are numerous similarities between Hindu and Zulu traditions but I am sure some of them are embodied in most cultures of the world. We are all children of the same earth.

This reminds me of the Sivahili saying which was frequently quoted by the first Tanzanian president, the late Guru or Mualimu Julius Nyerere: Bindamu wote ni ndugu zangu na Africa ni moja - "I believe in the brotherhood of man and in the unity of Africa." The Vedas say: Vasudhaiva kutumbakam - "the world is one family." In Zulu, this spirit of unity of mankind is called Ubuntu.

Dr Shishupal Rambharos and the Arya Samaj movement of South Africa have become the embodiment of this spirit of Ubuntu, towering like Mount Kilimanjaro in the field of social welfare and in the implementation of Vedic values and traditions.

Our bodies are made of the same five elements of water, earth, fire, air and ether. Rishis tell us that all these elements are active in human beings, while only four elements are active in animals.

um, look at what the website says:

QUOTE

which I agree fully with.

also, the website's claims of similarities are to be understood in the context of discussing two philosophies. not the two general cultures themselves. O_o;
not to mention that most of the world - including indians and zulus are not even aware of these supposed "similarities". besides, zulu is only one ethnic group in south africa.

it just looks like the author's own personal research on similarities between two philosophies, which u can do with just about anything.

culturally you think of india's cultural affinities with other south asians, and then even with the persian world. you can even think of india's influence with buddhism throughout asia. but not with zulu...not to mention "africans" as a whole.

btw, as for the topic. ive had several black female friends who have a thing for "desi" boys lol
tamere
the funniest thing was when a african dude come into a forum, where we talked about indian movies, and wrote something about the indian races....(which had nothing to do with it, we were talking about the different *ollywoods of india)

most of em are so race fixed icon_confused.gif
ndnboi
and thats a bad thing?
YoungOne
why do people ask these stupid question and b!tch about how some people don't like them?
First you ask why EA hate SA and now you have a problem against black people liking Indians what is wrong with you?

Nice article Tav6.

Have you heard about Siddhis?

QUOTE

IPB Image

SIDDHIS

Still another foreign-origin group, usually known collectively as Siddhis, are the descendants of Africans brought to India as slaves. Although most African-origin Indians are descendants of the large influx of slaves brought to western India in the seventeenth century, the first Africans reportedly arrived on the Konkani Coast in the first century A.D. as a result of the Arab slave trade, and there was an important African presence, including several short-term rulers, in Bengal in the fifteenth century. Siddhis (the name means lord or prince in African usage) sometimes rose to prominent--even ruling--governmental and military positions during the Mughal and British periods.

Most modern-day Siddhis are Muslims and are engaged in agricultural pursuits. They are found in Gujarat, Daman and Diu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and other states and union territories, where they are designated as Scheduled Tribe members.

Neeraj
I don't know any Africans but it's pretty cool that they're so open and interested in Indian culture if it is true.

FrenchVanillaNYC
Is this topic about Africans or any black person in general?

I'm black and like Indian culture(s) and I've never thought it's something that weird about it (well, I like a lot of cultures.......:p). I have a few friends who also do. Actually, I'm listening to a Tamil song right now...

I was just saying...cuz the indian guy who works at the local 7-11 had black skin and nappy hair.
U could mistake him for african but he has the indian music playing in the background, and he was talking perfect indian complete with indian accent to this other indian girl.
swathi
I don't see anything wrong in africans or anybody being interested in indian culture. It's a good thing.

U will find negriod population in pockets all over india. And dark skin is found all over india not just south. maybe indians should first take a trip to india and check out every state instead of going to paris or venice for vacation. We are brown Period.

Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world before christianity and islam and judaism. Have you people seen the movie TROY Eric bana is cremated the same way hindus get cremated. greeks has sun god and all the other gods and same way even hindus have sun god etc. Greeks converted to monothestic religion while hindus held on to their beliefs. Even the inhabitants of africa were more of nature worshippers so there will be some similarities in beliefs like vodoos etc even in india we have tantriks etc We also have tribal people in india who will wear beads and play drums. Customs have been copied from all over the world. u will find these kind of tribal people even in south america.

offtopic: hinduism isn't the oldest religion in the world. various native religions are all over the world. i believe that forms of shamanism, animism, and various nature worship as well ancestral worship had been practiced before it.

well people who r very dark are not in any way related to africans i think...they r normally poor people who have to work in sun all day for living....even some russians look like africans with very light skin..that doest relate them with africans

people from south india to italy all r brown with various shades ...this is my opinion

[offtopic: hinduism isn't the oldest religion in the world. various native religions are all over the world. i believe that forms of shamanism, animism, and various nature worship as well ancestral worship had been practiced before it.]

Totally Incorrect and you are playing with facts.
Well the story of Sanatan Culture(now called hinduism) traces back nine hundred thousand years back according to astronomial calculations, and the concept of binding a society in a particular suite called religion is given by hinduism.
swathi
can u tell me the names of other religions that were around before or with hinduism buddhism and jainism sikkism came after hinduism.

Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma was never an organized religion as it is today. The oldest organized religion was probably Zoroastrianism, in Persia.

Sanatana Dharma does not have a starting point in history, it does not have a founder, and has no Church. The sages who shaped the Hindu religion merely reiterated the teachings of the Vedas, the Hindu scriptures, most of which were unwritten. The Vedas are believed to have no origin. In ancient India, the Vedas formed the educational system and broadly comprised all the different spheres of life, such as spiritual, scientific, medical and so on.

Hinduism is a way of life.

Agar ye mazak bhi hai to bada bogus mazak hai.
Zoroastrianism traces back its history in 400~600BC, btw hinduism/sanatan culture is as described in vedas and upanishads, Ish & Ken upanishad, Mandukya Upanishad and Manduk upanishad are significat if you wish to trace back the history according to astrological points of significance, Well no more argues because you think that Zoroastrianism was before Vedas, how pity.
Jhangora
Agree some people even say Zoroaster was born in India and expelled alongwith his followers to present day Iran.
Jamie4mIndia
Its true that zoroster attained his higher self through pure vedic system under an indian spiritual master(guru), he energised himself this much that it was not possible to face him, watching his eyes was not possible for a normal man.

[i started the topic hoe]

Seems you dont know about Indian culture completely, Religion is an essential part of almost 99% indians.

What i conclude abt your topic is, Africans are interested in Indian culture in a same ratio they are interested in any other different culture, Thats true, In the times i am also interested in africa and sometimes japanese/chinese etc. Its not actually a flood of africans who are interested in specifically Indian culture. And religion is a most significant part off Indian life.
tamere
me is hindu brother, i still know few things about indian culture....even though i live in europe, so it's not really a part of my life ( maybe at home)...
Jamie4mIndia
Yes I realise that its not part of your life icon_smile.gif

anyways going back to topic, maybe because to some extent the Asian culture that alot of Africans see (including some Carribean) is Indian because of the desi emigres there.

There are some kenyans here in university and their friends in kenya are quite interested in India, because of cheap education and free food/room in university hostel icon_wink.gif
