Filipinos are Asians. This topic has been discussed in my sociology class. According to my professor, the idea that Filipinos are Pacific Islanders are based on the American perspective, not on Filipinos themselves. Also, as a Filipina living in the Philippines, I've never met a Filipino (living in the Philippines) who does not consider himself/herself as an Asian.
Filipinos living abroad might have a problem in identifying themselves due to differing information. Some Filipinos consider themselves Asians while some believe they Pacific Islanders. In America, the term Asian usually refers to East Asians (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc.) while in the UK, Asian refers to South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis). Southeast Asians (especially us Filipinos) are caught in the middle. Differences in religion, language, and culture (Spanish and American influences in our case )with our fellow Asians also become factors as to why despite many similarities, Filipinos fail in the "Asian Test" for some.
Different opinions are welcome.
