Today i went to a pasar malam( don't know if it's spelled correctly) with a friend of mine. It was great fun. Indo rock performers and tasty food!

I was wonderin if in the states you have something similar. In the Netherlands the pasar is organized somethin like a fair. Indo people and many others get together and have a good time.

Hi BB.

Good to hear you enjoyed the pasar malam. Didn't know they had pasar malam in the Netherlands!

So were you from, they get organized like this also. On special occasions and stuff or are those pasars malams a regular thing? Might thinking about going to the biggest pasar malam in the hague, because i really enjoyed it. By the way, i'm cambodian and i hope idon't offend anyone here. icon_wink.gif Here in the netherlands we all get along fine, sometimes forums are a different story.

Hi BB, I am from Kuala Lumpur and the pasar malam is also part of our nightlife in Malaysia. We don't really have pasar malam here in the UK where I am living at the moment. I suppose Indonesian's influence on the Netherlands is bigger than Malaysia's is on the UK (I think that role is played by India). So they do good pasar malams at the Hague, do they? Someday you should see come for the real pasar malams in Indonesia. I have only been to the one in Bali, which was great! I think that things like pasar malam are a common event in most of southeast Asia. Certainly there were pasar malam equivalents in Thailand. What about Cambodia BB?

Yeap boogie brat, I've heard of the Pasar Malam Besar in The Hague from my relatives over in Holland. I found this official website of the event, Pasar Malam Besar, contains much information about the festival. Appearantly this event was organized by pro-Dutch Eurasians who fled newly-independent Indonesia in 1950s. I knew some were still sore by the loss of their homeland, such as the people who took 100 Dutch school-children hostage and hijacked a train in 1977(see BBC link) icon_sad.gif

Therefore, many Indonesians tend to view the Eurasian and South Mollucan population in Netherlands as anti-Indonesian and still bitter about our independence.
It is such wonderful gesture by the Eurasians to hold this celebration of Indonesian culture, also inviting artists from Indonesia, as a show of reconcillation forgetting the past and working for peaceful future. kiss.gif
Triste
The Indonesian Students Association in New South Wales, Australia does a lot of events. Often they're done in clubs and the like, but it's still good.

Hey malaccan! I don't know about the evening markets in Cambodia, i've been there once when i was seventeen. I saw mosty stands along the road and such.
In Holland we just enjoy the pasar malam organized by the indo's. Our community is too small for organizing stuff like that.

Thanks for the info purnomor! I have a few indonesian friends, so i can drop my knowledge on them. :genius: biggrin.gif It's

This is a very odd question as pasars or pasar malams are very normal in Indonesia for centuries and those Indo-people you are talking about, were what we call Indische mensen: Indo keturunan (Hindia) Belanda who went to the Netherlands for some reasons (since the fifties)I don't want to mention here.

Hi mas eddi!

Sorry for the odd question. Before i posted this i didn't understood the meaning of pasar malam. I thought it was more of a event. I didn't want to offend you in any way.
rasibiduk
yes I've heard also about the Tong-tong Pasar Malam in Netherlands, which is dubbed as the largest Eurasian (in this case Indo-Dutch) event in the world. Any pics of the event itself?

Oh, you didn't offend me Boogie Brat, but the Indo-people you were talking about, they could have tell you more about the Indonesian/English origin of the Pasar Malam Besar.

Here is a link -- from an other pasar malam -- for you -
Alas it's in the Dutch language, and here the history (geschiedenis) is told about the first pasar malam = fancy fair organised by Cambier in Batavia (Jakarta)

Ihe Indo Dutch man Tjallie Robinson organised the first PMB in the Netherlands, though it was more a berkumpulan for all those Indo-dutch peope who came from Indonesia to the Netherlands.
And now the Indo-dutch call the pasar malam -- the Pasar Malam Besar -- as their own culture.
