Vincent Houver, head of IOM’s emergency operation in Lebanon added that IMO would cover evacuation costs from Beirut to Syria. The Vietnamese government would then cover expenses incurred in sending the stranded Vietnamese from Syria to Vietnam.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese embassy in Egypt said that only 148 Vietnamese guest workers [not 200 like Houver said] in Lebanon have registered to return home.

The Vietnam Television Channel VTV3 reported today that the laborers would arrive in neighboring Syria in the next 2-3 days. Anyone wishing to return home will then be sent on to Vietnam.

Hoang Manh Ha, a Vietnamese in Lebanon, told Thanh Nien over the phone many Vietnamese guest workers in the war-torn country have lost their passports. Others are reluctant to evacuate as the families employing them have not paid them due salaries, he said.
