He is unknown in India, but one of the most famous Indians in China. He came to China during the Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and served as a doctor, saving thousands of Chinese soldiers' lives. He had a son with a Chinese nurse, native of Dalian, in northeast China (Manchuria). They had a son named "YinHan" (which is a combination of Chinese characters for India and the Han Chinese people.

The Chinese government issued a special stamp in his honor in the 1980's. Last year, 200,000 Chinese visited his grave in Shijiazhuang, to pay homage to this great Indian. The Chinese are eternally in debt to this great man who helped fight against the inhuman Japanese.

During Zhu Rongji's visit to India in 2002, he requested to the Indian PM to visit the suriving sister of Kotnis, to present her of Mao Zedong's inscription of Kotnis, which reads: "The army has lost a helping hand, the nation has lost a friend. Let us always bear in mind his internationalist spirit.."

I remember you mentioning him a few months back. I read about him having a memorial in China and even his own statue. There's also been both a 40s Indian movie and 80s Chinese movie based on him. It's a shame he's been forgotten in his home country though.

[He is unknown in India]

That s not true, If his last name is Kotnis, there is a bollywood movie on his story, ' Dr. kotnis ki amar kahani' , I saw this movie when i was a kid, it showed war front and Dr. serving for all injured.

This link has a review for the movie.

That was a 40s movie. He was probably well known in India at the time but is now largely forgotten in India.

[but is now largely forgotten in India.]

India is a specialist in forgetting all heroes who spent their lives for dignity of india. In india they only give honour to those politicians who actually kill the country.
Jhangora
I saw the movie, it was good.

I wouldn't say he's unknown in India, as there is a film (as mentioned) based on him and I think a stamp in his memory.

Anyway, he's definately more renowned in China as much of his work was done there, and his wife I think was Chinese.
PervertBurger
I read the story about his wife. Its really sad how their only son died from malpractice.
Jagger
It's a shame that Dr. Kotnis and his son both died at a young age.

Yawn, so what? Did those chinese soldiers or Mao do anything for India? Nope.

The Japanese were our best allies.

Ya Japanese believe in long term relations. biggthumpup.gif .

You guys don't think they would have attacked us like they did with the Chinese in WW2? From what I heard, they wanted to set up a Japanese friendly government in India and help us kick out the British, not destroy us like they wanted to with the Chinese but I dunno.

Subash Chandra Bose asked for the Japanese's help in getting the British out and had Indian soldiers fight the British alongside the Japanese and then there were Indian soldiers in the British army fighting the Japanese.

Nice link.

Ever heard of imperialism, little rahul?

In any case there was widespread support among Indian public and overseas Indians. Indian army+navy went on strike after exposure to INA and that caused British to quit India.
