I am a European who is looking for a good online place to buy Katana swords, similar to the ones used in "Kill Bill". Does anybody have any idea where to look for this?

Depends whether you have the money for the real deal or not.
There are plenty of places that offer good replicas.
Spain produces some good Iaitos (training swords)

Eh they're mostly real antique ones that we keep for show and clean them to make them all pretty and stuff. We have some in Japan right now getting super cleaned or something...

They're probably WW2 era blades.

Those were mass produced by the thousands for junior officers. Not hard to get ahold of those at all. Tokugawa blades are a bit more rare but still defineatly attainable if you've got the coin.

I assumed that they were factory produced as well. However you never know. I simply wanted to confirm.

Ogumo--I'm not sure. My dad is really into the whole..sword thing. He started collecting a long time ago. When I find out for sure if they were mass produced or not..I'll tell you. All I know is that every one of them has that water mark? [the wavy thing] That you get when it's forged. I don't know if that means it could still have been mass produced, but...I'm guessing that they weren't.

The hamon on the blade can be put on there by sand blasting the metal. Thats how the mass produced blades got their hamon. If you can, try taking off the hilts and look at its tang. If there is a serial number then its a factory piece, if its from a swordsmith, it should have his name, the place and date of manufacture in kanji.

And if its authentically restored to the point where its as if its new, there should be papers in between the tang and the hilt. There maybe writing on the tang, but the paper was there just for balance and shock absorption.

I've got a couple of swords as well. A ww2 piece and a modern piece. Swords are neat things. Its a shame movies like Kill Bill and Last Samurai exploit such fine tools of war.

Her father probably wont allow her to take it apart if it really is the real deal...
chynagongju
Hahaha that's true Ogumo embarassedlaugh.gif

But in addition to katanas, I know we also have wakashashis, tantos, tachii [signed differently from katanas], and a naginata.

Then she'd know its the real deal. biggrin.gif

chynagongju: You've a naginata? Nice!! I know my grandfather in Iwate has an old rusted out Yari head. Naginata are much much more rare tho. I'd take up naginata-do but there's no sensei here and its pretty much a female sport.... biggrin.gif So kendo would have to do.

tachii [signed differently from katanas]

The difference between tachi and katana are that the mounts are different. Tachi mounts are so that the blade side is down in the sheath and was useful with calvary. Katanas evolved when the shogunate took power and horseback samurai were outdated. So the quick slip into the obi was preferred to all those knots with the tachi. Im sure you know this but just some info for the others.

i think the wooden ones r called bokkens and are used for training, i want quality samurai sword one day but they cost serious $$$$
ComradeJing
Some of the sword's in her father's collection are probably authentic ww2 era swords. Some are probably older. The ones being sent to Japan for repair are probably not ww2 swords(unless you are violating customs law). Simply because Japan has a ban on ww2 era swords mass produced for the army. Any such sword if found, either imported or exported, are subject to seizure and destruction. However, they are somewhat common in the U.S. as plenty of GI's brought them home as war booty. The quality on most of them are pretty crappy generally as they were mass produced from poor quality steel. High quality metals went for the construction of actually useful military weapons. Much of the metal used for mass produced swords were recycled.
