Trying to be a spy on our powerful neighbor. First, wow!!! That's China? No difference from any other developed country, even better.
Second, I wonder if anyone here has similar shots of skyscrapercities and recent tall-building constructions in VN. If you do, please share.
Thx.

Eh what's the point of having skyscrapers in Vietnam? They'll probably get bombed anyway just by looking at the rate that Vietnam gets into wars. Probably on average 2 to 4 wars per century.
Hey Byron, be optimistic! After years of war destructions and conflicts, I have a feeling that Vietnamese finally come to realize how important it is to avoid wars. Vietnamese are the experts who can really tell the curious what wars really do to their country.

I dunno, but Vietnamese have been fighting constantly throughout history. In fact, I believe Western Scholars say Vietnam is called the "Prussia of the East" because like Germany in Europe, Vietnam is one of the most fought battlegrounds in asia.

VietNam (Dai Viet) had fought off China, Mongolia, France and America. In between battles were fought with Cambodia, Laos, Burma and thailand.

I know we are good at fightings, but can we provide basic necessities to Vietnamese people like clean water and safe roads.
When I was visiting Vietnam, there was this stinking smell from the sewage and trash is everywhere.

Skyscrapers make good coporate headquarters because of hierarchical vertical communication between the different departments.
Sending a message or box to another department somewhere in the skyscraper is much easier than walking or driving to another building to do it.

VN need skyscrapers simply because we dont have enough land. High-rise buildings are inevitable. Some of the reasons i think are:
For a certain m^2 of office space, building high-rise buildings would:
- Cost less materials, labours and time to build.
- Take up less land, this is important for a densely populated countries like Vietnam.
- More efficient flow of resource and information if companies that are complementary are close to one another.
- Cost less to build a supporting network of infrastructure such as metro rail, roads, bus and ports.
- It takes less time and it is easier to find information from, or to deliver resources to a group of similar companies that are close to each others.
...and many more advantages.
Things develop like they are for a reason. Europe has more low-rise buildings, more old sandstone buildings because they were built before the industrial revolution, when people didnt do the economic comparison calculation like we do todays. They have less alternatives at that time and they collected much resources from their colonies to finance those constructions.
For example: to build a good-looking sandstone cathedrals (or a traditional east asian temples), you would need:
- Costly architectural plan from specialists because the standard architectural firms today are not able to design them.
- Sandstone that are worked and crafted individually by stone workers. This takes much time and effort and cost much more than ordering a standard steel beam size or brick.
- Constructions are more difficult because the structures could easily breaks due to the greater risk in using a natural, non-manufactured materials. There were less tests and studies done on these structures.
- The structure can easily be destroyed under small earthquakes or impact loads in comparison to a properly-designed high-rise building.
What Vietnam could do is to build those high-rise buildings in an appropriate place and preserve important architectural pieces that we already have. When we have more money, we can do better things later.

Hanoi Golden Lotus Tower Project

About the Hanoi Golden Lotus Tower Project, has construction gone under way of the tower yet? If so, when is it projected to be completed. The website that hosts the tower images,
http://www.stephenodell.com, doesn't provide any information. It just seems like the site owner, an architecture, just made a design and posted it up on the website. I tried looking up the golden lotus tower but came up with no results. So is the tower going to be built? Planned to be built at all? Just curious.
