The Thai and Cambodian prime ministers will board a helicopter on the weekend to jointly survey borders that have not been demarcated, caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Thursday.

The helicopter will take off at Preah Vihear Temple in Si Sa Ket province on Sunday.

He was speaking during a oneday trip to Cambodia during which he met his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Sen.

Unsettled borders, both at land and sea, between both countries were high on Thaksin's agenda.

The two countries have been negotiating land border disputes for several years. Demarcation work has been marred by landmines planted along the border during Cambodia's civil wars.

But they have settled the sea border as they have agreed to establish a joint development area.

Describing Cambodia as being more open on talking about land demarcation, Thaksin said any buildings or construction that were situated less than one kilometre from the border line should be removed during the demarcation.

Thaksin said officials of both sides will try to hammer out an agreement on sharing offshore oil reserves along the border.

"Even if we cannot agree this time, I think we will be closer to an agreement," Thaksin told reporters.

Both countries ministers signed a Bt1.3 billion loan deal with Thailand's Exim Bank to finance the upgrading of a highway in northwest Cambodia running from Siem Reap through Anlong Veng to the Thai border.

Siem Reap is the gateway to the famed Angkor Wat temple complex, Cambodia's biggest tourist attraction. The government is hoping to lure tourists to Anlong Veng, the final holdout of the former Khmer Rouge regime.

Hopefully our two countries can finally solve this problem.

Good news in Thai financing new high ways for Cambodia! I like reading these positive news. Its a breath of fresh air from the usual posts involving 'thailand and cambodia'.

i thought china was building an international highway in every country of asia to unite ALL, so that's really not necessary of thailand is it?
Sirikittong
I havent read any articles involving china's construction plans, but I know that the construction of the highway through siem reap and anlong veng to the thai border is critical--considering the concentration of human movement in that border area.

This new highway should greatly increase trade and development in both sides of the border.

I think China is building a railway linking ASEAN, route from China to Vietnam to Cambodia and so for.
Hun Sen...don't you trust them Thais!

You 'Think'? Show me articles, papers, research papers to prove this little 'claim' of yours.

Ive heard of the SINO-THAI highway, which is being jointly financed and built by both thai and chinese firms that is to link southern china to the warm water ports of Saiburi, Hat Yai, Bangkok, Pattaya etc. This highway runs through Laos.

I have not heard of a SINO-CAMBODIAN highway nor have i read plans of that.

Can you show me articles??

The government is also seeking $480 million for building part of a new ASEAN railroad from Kunming, China, to Loc Ninh, Vietnam. Cambodia's 255 km missing link would be from Bak Deung in Kampong Chhnang province through Phnom Penh to Snuol in Kampong Cham province and from there to Loc Ninh.

"The government has asked China for funding for the railroad and they promised to support the project," Pheakavanmony said, "Now we are waiting for the Cambodian and Vietnam partners to demarcate the border."

Well its about time the Cambodian railway systems were repaired; last time I was in cambodia--i saw the infamous 'bamboo trains' operating about.

I hope the Chinese comes through with this project--as Cambodia needs their railway system reinitiated again.

Good news, thanks for sharing and proving to us about this incident.

On that note, I also look forward to the joint creation of the northwestern highwaylinking siem reap/anlong veng with Thai border communities---which is estimated to cost 1.3 Billion Baht--around $34 Million.

It's old news--the railroad construction. There are hundreds of bamboo trains ultilising the rail road these days. They are getting more popular for farmers travelling between towns. Creative invention. Just another way to make a living.
Sirikittong
They're getting by with those. But it would be nice if Cambodia had an operating national railway system again.
Point_Dexter
Those trains WILL NOT OUT RUN TIGERS.
