Hi.

In an effort to understand culture in Japan,
I'm researching Japanese attitudes toward deformity.

What is the general reaction among native Japanese
toward those within their culture who have physical
or mental disabilities such as dwarfism,
mental retardation, or missing limbs?

Thanks.

When there's someone a little different from everyone else, most of the people act as if they didn't notice anything. Some people just start whispering behind the person's back, and a few stare. No one will openly mock the individual, but that doesn't mean that they'll try to help out either - they usually just try to have nothing to do with that person. People in Japan can seem pretty cold at times : / (I say this because of what I've seen and heard)
