Refer to this thread:

English and communications skills, Improvements much needed!!!

There are some interests from some bros in here to put up this pinned "Let's Learn English" thread. Once we think it is a good thing to have, we could ask supernovasp to help put it up and get things started.

I certainly DON'T consider myself an expert in English language, since I wasn't born in the US and I don't have a English degree (I am an engineer). But, I am at a decent level and could help some bros here. The hope is that, Vietnamese bros/sis, domestic and overseas, can help each other improve our English skills. I believe English and communications skills are very essential skills to have in today's competive working environment.

Please VOTE!!!

Thanks etalkishere,

I think that everyone here isn't interested in creating an english thread, because maybe they also are at a decent level of english like you, through the result of poll above I could see that biggthumpup.gif . Well, perhaps only I am ardent in this .

I suppose that the best way is if anyone has questions about english need to be cleared up, then they would post it in here, right below this topic ..

the first question that I need your help is to translate 3 sentences into vietnamese ... they make me confused .

He is pretty tall
He is rather tall
He is quite tall

They are the same meaning ?? shrug.gif . Dịch giùm tôi 3 câu đó sang Tiếng Việt nhé, etalkishere! ( a question is rather ngớ ngẩn confused.gif )

He is rather tall
He is quite tall

This is rather/pretty/quite a tricky one icon_smile.gif In this context, the translation that makes the most sense is: Anh cha`ng ddo' kha' cao. Same meaning to me in all three sentences. People often use them interchangeably in the US.
supernovasp
No, because the majority people here speak English already. This site is mainly in English, and is mostly for English speaking people.

You can speak English but have questions about grammar, or some other idioms.

to be honest theres no use for it here, english is pretty easy to read and understand, but pronouncing it is harder...........people need audio tape on how to pronounce words not read them.

havythoai,

Others can help you with English. There is no lack of it here. I welcome any contradictions and debates regarding to the topics discussed. I have always said to everyone point out one thing that does not make sense. I don't think anyone has effectively proven anything wrong with what I said. If you can't comprehend what I say, then it is the problem with English or simply a shock to the system that can't see a new idea.

But go ahead for I love to see different interpretations to what I say even though I only say the very simple things, thus no one can contradict me.

With so much controversy about the topics I discuss, you would think there are more contradictions. But unfortunately they don't have one, not 3lashes, USA or Hoho jinxs (I got to add the Chinese - can't leave them out in the cold). Consider this when you post a question.

SO WHY HAVEN'T YOU CORRECTED THIS SENTENCE:

(((If there is any mistake about English that I made. Please report to me.)))

Check this thread out if you like:

If you don't agree, all you need to do is contradict it if you can! Really it's that simple! You don't need me to tell you this, do you? Please try not to be a typical 3lashes - '"can't do anything".

So, was VNCH ideology right all along?, is CSVN trying to be VNCH 30years ago?

He is pretty tall = ông ấy rất cao
He is rather tall = ông ấy khá cao
He is quite tall = [công nhận là] ông ấy rất cao

PRETTY is used in lieu and place of VERY.

RATHER is interchangeable with FAIRLY

QUITE is normally used together with ACTUALLY:
He is quite tall, actually = quả thật là ông ấy rất cao.

***
On most of AF Forums, I noticed that almost everybody makes many same mistakes again and again. (is this typical of Asian Americans? is this the newest trend of "tiếng Mỹ bồi"?)

Like, using THEN instead of THAN in a comparison; definAtely instead of DEFINITELY; prolly instead of PROBABLY... AnywayS instead of ANYWAY... Theirselves instead of THEMSELVES... Now a days instead of NOWADAYS... confusing YOUR and YOU'RE... SHOULD OF instead of SHOULD'VE (contraction of "should have")...

I'm sure (I participate in may forums) White Americans don't make these recurrent mistakes. Of course 100% of English people don't make these mistakes.

I'll probably add more mistakes to the above list.

Interesting thoughts johannjs, although I disagree one thing.

When used as an adverb, pretty = moderately, or to a fair degree. Whereas, very = extremely, or in a high degree. So, very is quite stronger than pretty in the context being used icon_smile.gif

This is a strange feeling. Are you sure you are a Catho? They don't usually agree with me. Groups that don't agree with me are: pro USA/3lashes, Hoho jinx, Chinese and Catho, oh and punks. I am having one following my a-ss right now. Hihihi

Do you agree with this:

QUOTE(Heavenandearth @ Aug 19 2006, 02:04 PM)

Shi-t you are the first Catho that agrees with me. I am not sure if the rest of the Cathos like this idea, buddy.

Whatever religion you are, you should learn to recognize truths and practice to do good. Buddhism promotes this. All other religions just tell you not to question - do what I say.

Heavenandearth icon_smile.gif

I'm not much into religious discussions and debates, since I know all religions, except Satanism and others that worship evils, promote violence and hatred, are good for all human kinds. All religions, including one being lead by the Roman Catholic Church, although in different forms and ways of teaching, promote peace, love, and doing good to others, especially those most in need.

I could not speak for other Catholics. Personally, besides from the beautiful teachings I've got everyweek, I also have my own thinkings and believes which need to be in sync with the teachings. For example, I want our Vietnamese people to have happy, prosperous lives. Watching our people suffer because of starvation and poverty really hurts.

That's all I could say icon_smile.gif

Take care bro.
Heavenandearth
That alright. But remember, those who don't want to discuss it, don't want to learn and explore the deeper level. Clearly, Catho doesn't promote this whereas, Buddhism promotes it all the way without violence ofcourse.

Take a very good care and be very careful of what you choose to believe. It may blind you to other possibilities. Then it is very sad to see.

I respect what you believe, and I hope you respect what others believe icon_smile.gif It's just that I believe in what I believe, and I have a heck of a busy life (sometimes, I am still thinking why the heck I am here typing in this forum as supposed to do something else, hihi), and I already know being a Catholic is a very good thing for me, and for my kids, I just don't have time to explore further icon_smile.gif

Materially Catho offer much material benefits for their aims are power and control. Buddhism offer pure truth and unity, thus it never interested with power and material gains. So that is why it never afraid for you to explore. You don't have time to explore further or you don't want to explore further? Exloring truth, you can do it with every breath you take. Looks like you are already blinded, but there is still some hope. I do understand there are plenty of good Christain people. But it is the core that's scarry.

the problem with you is that you really do not understand religion and it's teaching. all you can do is think politically. of course religion gets mixed up with the government sometimes and that there are negative impacts as there are bad people in power in any religion. your definition of a "religion" needs to be redefined
Heavenandearth
Catho aims are money, power and therefore politics are all the same. Its history is full of this, witch hunts, crusades, child molestations, involves in wars and control of governing. That is why people have to separate it out: religion and state. Ring any bell? I have said this from the very start don't intend to keep repeating to you, punk.

Have you found anything you can contradict? What else you can understand. I thought you say you don't. Hihihi

This thread is really about voting on whether putting up Let's Learn English is a good idea. There have been interests to setup a pinned Let's Learn English thread beyond Vietnamese Chat forum, so everyone in AF can be benefited.

With that being said, I really appreciate if every is thoughtful of others in AF and starts taking religious discussions and rebates, or other heated discussions, out of this thread.

Let's not be selfish.

Ok ! maybe we shouldn't put the things like this in this topic. It's just for me to learn English biggthumpup.gif
