it depends on where you live in japan. in tokyo and osaka, yes its expensive. but i found other towns/cities to be decently priced.
I think from your posts, you'd probably want to live in Tokyo/Osaka... so unless you have connections there.. or you want to marry there.. you'll be hard pressed to live inside the city.

if you are from China, it would be not easy to live in Japan.
if you are from Switzerland where the average monthly income for newly college graduates is US$5,000, you don't thik it's that costly to live in Japan.

It costs a lot a lot to live in Japan. I heard its like ranked number 1 expensive to live in.

yes its expensive because theres so much $hit to buy there.
Standard of living is expensive there, food, products, everything. Well, just a bit more expensive than the US. As for real estate, I've found some places for decent prices. But the thing is the rent would be similar to something here in America but would be 1/3 the size. Like you'd be paying 1800$/month for 1 bedroom apartment which is all crammed together. *shrug*
