Its sad that Khmer surin cant act like normal khmer. Thais make it illegal Thai people go to khmer surin village just to find someone who speaks khmer then beat them and put them in jail and then they put it on tv to make example. but khmer surin are very brave and try to preserve khmer culture anyway. even some khmer surin got beatin and stoned to death theyre still proud of khmer customs. we must not forget this. Our oppressed brothers need SUPPORTS..
more or less four hundred years ago, khmer land was conguered and ruled; half by siam and the other half by annam or viet. you know the history, i don't need to profess. only the french entervention that saved Cambudeja from extinction. in the old days there were forced assimilation and slavery of our dark skin people, but since Rama V, about 200 years ago, khmer people were just another subject of the thai domain just like the laos and the malays and recieved equal treatment under the kings rule. one must remember that nationalism is a very recent phenomenon. about the beating and jailing, i have not witnessed it myself or heard it being done. i am from sakaeo or srah keo in khmer, my home is only one kilometer from the cambodian boarder and it is only 30 minute drive from kao e dang refugee camp. we do speak khmer everyday at home and speak thai or siem in official functions.
it is our everyday conversation that we wondered, when will our brethren in Cambudeja, live a peaceful and productive life and have many, many children and stop killing each other. i must tell you that there are more khmerr, in thailand than in cambudeja or cambodia. for example, in bankok or krung tep, there are lots of khmer people living and working just like the next person in thailand. you will only know that the person is khmer if you only ask. as for me, i speak khmer all the time with my fellow khmerr in bankok, in the bus, in the taxi, in the mall, etc, etc, etc.
