"Long Thanh International Airport is a airport planned for construction in Long Thanh County, Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam, approx 40 km North-east Ho Chi Minh City. It is intended to become operational by 2011 and handle over 100 million passengers annually when it is built to the maximum designed capacity.

Ambition of the Vietnam government

This airport is built to become one of the busiest transit airports in Asia. It will be the hub for non-stop flights from Asian countries to the United States and Latin American countries and vice versa. Before 1975, Saigon Tan Son Nhat used to be one of the busiest airports in the world thanks to its geographical advantage and the attraction of tourist sites in Vietnam."

Woah that's a HUGE number. O_O

How many tourists visit HCM right now?
ham_let
NO PICTURES OR ARTISTS' RENDITIONS?!?!? O__O! GRR!

embarassedlaugh.gif

that's pretty awesome though. will it be bigger than the airport in bangkok?
Cookielover
That's too ambitious. When will Vietnam ever get 100 million passengers? If they'd build the airport, there'll be over-capacity for decades.

Will we have two international airports for use after this one is done?

After Long Thanh International Airport is completed, Tan San Nhat airport will be for domestic use.

South Region: Long Thanh International Airport (100 million passengers capacity)

North Region: Noi Bai International Airport (50 million passengers capacity)

Central Region: Da Nang International Airport (4 million passengers capacity)

Vietnam can really become a hub of Asia. Since flights over the Pacific can't make it much farther our West (Towards the Middle East) Vietnam is a good re-fueling stop. Plus you can go up North to places like Japan/Korea/China and South to Indonesia/Australia/Malaysia/Singapore/etc.
Nha Le
I can very much see Long Thanh International Airport as the Rome of ASEAN.

Vietnam is not as poor as it seems.

The GDP (PPP) Per Capita of Vietnam is $3,000. However, it should be higher than that because many Vietnamese do not report their extra income because they are afraid that the government will confiscate their money. This illustrates a distrust among the citizens and the government. After Vietnam is admitted to the WTO and more foreign banks are allowed to do business in Vietnam, more Vietnamese people will save and invest their money in those foreign banks.

After Vietnam is admitted to the WTO, more transparency and more productivity will increase, leading to greater increase of GDP (PPP) Per Capita for Vietnamese people.
PervertBurger
I think they should focus more on that subway project than on a new Airport. Sheesh. I admire Vietnam for being so ambitious with the development of their country but they seem to have the mentality that as long as theres money, theres focus. Thats not always true.

Long-term plans for four runways flanking two main terminals and two satellite buildings with a combined capacity capable of handling up to 100 million passengers and 6.4 million tonnes of cargo a year are on the drawing board. The second phase of airport expansion involving the construction of a satellite building south of the main terminal is expected to begin 3 to 5 years after the completion of the first main terminal.

Long Thanh and Suvarnabhumi are going to both try to be the new hub of ASEAN..... hmm, why can't they both just meet each other halfway... at Sihanoukville? biggrin.gif

Can't wait to have this airport operational by 2011! We need to have an airport at international level like this one. Hopefully, it won't run into delaying issues like other infrastructure and building projects. It seems Vietnam is well known for slow implementation icon_sad.gif

=================================

Vietnam Seeks to Grow Stock Market Value Eightfold by 2010

``In Vietnam, the question is always implementation,'' said Jonathan Pincus, senior country economist at the United Nations Development Program in Hanoi. Will the provision for accountability and transparency ``be enforced so that companies will have to abide by the laws and investors know exactly what they're getting when they buy shares?''
TrashCleaner
I rather the projects were all started. (with good plan). Slow progress or temporary delay is still better than only having plans on paper.

You've got to have good plan so investors can invest in the country.

The bigger the plan, the better ( i think ). I dont care what other countries think. Vietnam should build biggest things in Southeast Asia. It helps to attract more investors. We have already started on the biggest Dam in southeast asia (Son La dam project). We are building the biggest airport in Southeast Asia. We already finished the world longest single cable line from mainland to Hon Treo island (i heard). I hope (and im pretty sure) in near future, vietnam will build longest tunnel, biggest stadium...in Southeast Asia.

People are naturally suckers. They are usually impressed with eyes and numbers. If GPD of Vietnam can reach just 9+ %, we will see much more potentials because there can be more news out of that figure.

Vietnam’s new int’l airport to be major regional competitor

Vietnam’s new international airport in Dong Nai province is to be a global transit destination in the Southeast Asian region, said a senior official from the Civil Aviation Authority Tuesday.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister has approved a master plan for construction of the Long Thanh International Airport in Long Thanh District of Dong Nai Province, 40km south east of HCMC.

“One of the most important aspects of the project is to make Vietnam the country of choice for transit to compete with airports in Singapore, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. Foreign travelers will choose to transit via the Long Thanh Airport to go to other places in the world,” said Vu Pham Nguyen Tung, deputy head of CAAV’s airport management department.

Major passenger load

The airport will command some US$8 billion in investment and cover 5,000 hectares, designed to handle 5 million pieces of cargo and 100 million passengers per year, 10 times Tan Son Nhat Int’l Airport in HCMC.

The project is also aimed at alleviating passenger loads at Tan Son Nhat Airport, as it is impossible to expand the airport due to space limitations.

The authority will focus on promotion activities for the airport and propose the government to adopt “market-opening” policies to attract carriers to the airport, said Mr. Tung.

“In the initial phase, air carriers operating flights to Long Thanh will enjoy reductions and exemptions in landing, take-off, and air traffic navigation fees,” he explained.

According to Mr. Tung, the 40km distance from Long Thanh to HCMC is ideal in that it will not cause noise pollution or disturb urban activities in the city.

The airport is scheduled to open between 2010 and 2015 with four runways able to receive Airbus 380s, and have several terminals and commercial sections.

Currently, CAAV is conducting feasibility studies for phase-one infrastructure construction.

National plan

Noi Bai Int’l Airport in Hanoi will be expanded and upgraded to receive 50 million passengers a year to meet the traveling demand of the northern region, he said.

In the central region, Danang Int’l Airport is building a new 4-million-passenger-per-year international terminal, with Chu Lai Airport in central Quang Nam province designated essential for cargo transit.

That's great. We definitely need to start competing for jet travelers. We could always use the extra cash brought in from flyers, not to mention more tourist coming into the country. Singapore Airlines does great business, despite being a tiny little island.
SoCal
One benefit of this new airport is Vietnam can offer cargo carrier like Fedex to use Vietnam as a transportation hub center to deliver stuffs to other countries in Southeast Asia and South Asia.

By the summer 2007, you can get direct flight with Vietnam Airlines from Los Angeles/San Francisco to Saigon/Hanoi. The ticket probably will cost you at least $1,000. icon_smile.gif

I don't like direct flight. Staying in an airplane that long is not a pleasant feeling for me thumbsdown.gif

^ Actually, it is down right dangerous too for those prone to stroke. Estimates are in the 10's of thousands for people dying of stroke a day or two after they go on long flights, particularly overseas flights. Victims or their families long flight induced blood clotting/stroke never make the link because it typically happens when they are at home when the stroke occurs. The airlines have known this for decades and have hidden it from the flying public. Typical. Doctors say that you should always move around a lot if possible, i.e. go to the bathroom, wiggle your feet, tense your leg muscles, etc. Of course, in this post-911 era, walking around too much during flights is not much of an option.

Shocking, but medical experiments have shown that even young and healthy twenty year olds suffer from blood clots due to long flights. It's just that their healthy bodies are able to break down these blood clots, whereas older, fatter, stroke prone people just die--I guess. neartears.gif

Its great that they're building a new airport because I've been to Tan Son Nhut Int airport and it's a complete $hit hole.

Great news, economically the new airport will be beneficial for VietNam. I hope more airports will be build and old ones renovated.

Wow a Huge Airport in Saigon Sounds awesome!!! Will they still have the complimentary corrupted communists waiting at the passport check??? confused.gif confused.gif
You know the one that gives visitors a hard time unless you pay extortion money and only do it to Viets that can speak Vietnamese?? It won't be the same without them. embarassedlaugh.gif embarassedlaugh.gif

I hope a new airport would come with better customer service than the current state. Most of VietNamese companies in the country still treat their customers like trash.

Thailand's Suvarnabhumi = $4 Billion
Long Thanh International Airport = $8 Billion

All this time, the government was saving every penny to build this capital called Long Thanh International Airport. Shame on you people for calling our government corrupted. icon_twisted.gif

Thanks, Socal, for the Asia map. I never thought China was that big, like 1/2 of Asia land. Damn greedy!

Bangkok airport looks very impressive. I thought it'd cost a lot more than $4 bil.

100 million passengers/year

wow. that's twice the capacity of SEA's largest airport.
