At present i believe Japan is the best country in the world.

Although they have done wrong in the past, they are trying to make up for their mistakes. Especially in Asia.

Japan is very very very western. I wouldn't say it preserved ALL its culture. Maybe 1/4 of it. But certainly not ALL.

This is a truly funny post. I consider myself a patriot but even I don't think that this post makes any sense at all. How can any country be the "best" country in the world. Every country has good aspects and bad aspects. I for one, although I don't like many of their policies, respect America. It was founded on great ideals and a great system that works. If you better educate its people, then America would truly be a magnificent country. Japan on the underhand is founded on a terrible system and national personality is of low-self-esteem and masochism. Japan has MILLIONS of things it needs to change and saying it is the best country in the world is blasphemous.

Umm I wouldn't say it's THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. That title would probably go to the USA, Australia or Canada..maybe New Zealand as well. The Scandanavian countries also enjoy a high standard of living. However having said that, how can we measure "the best".

Japan is very strong in most types of technologies (mainly consumer electronics and automotive) except for probably space and military technology.

The "pitfalls" of Japan include:

- Small living space, most people in Japan live in apartments or homes that are small compared to Western houses. Also they are extremely expensive, obviously land being precious due to the extremely high population and limited land space.

- Life would be hell for most non-Japanese, including Koreans and Chinese. Let's face is, all countries are racist - but compared to the Western countries, racism seems worse in Asia, Japan is no exception.

- Long working hours and a harder working life. Japanese men are reknown to be workaholics, yes they get paid well but sheesh, the amount of time they work is phenonmenal.

- Women lack the equal opportunities enjoyed by Western countries, especially Scandanavian ones - Sweden, Norway...etc.

Compared with Asia, it's heaven, but it still has a way to go with some pitfalls as I pointed out. Living space is probably that can't be changed, in the near future anyway.

Japan is very Westernised compared to other Asian countries, however, it probably still has some ancient customs it clings to. A strict hierachy is one of them, it is unlike the West also in the fact that generally the lower ranked employees will refrain from challenging or questioning their boss. This would I guess apply for students and their teachers. It's very Western in structure and lifestyle....but as for customs, I'm not so sure, I mean there is still head bowing...and I'm not sure if the majority of the younger ones move out at 18...

Go to Japan (especially big cities like Tokyo or Osaka) and live there for 2 years.

Japan isn't a city. Osaka should be a place that you should avoid. It's too politically active there. Anyway Tokyo and Sapporo and Kyoto are cities with countless entertainments.

I'd say Japan is the most advanced/modern Asian country in the world. To me, the only thing BEST about Japan is their technology and pop culture.

The problem of racism is the smallest in Japan out of the Asian countries, though. This is one of the things I am proud of about my country. The only problem I have is the impoverished and illegal immigrants that stream from China and other Asian countries.

I think there is also a lot of ugly side Japan have like the war atrocities, Dumping of garbage in other Asian countries!

There were also a lot of poor people in Japan!

I have to say, Japan is not the greatest place to live in, but I admire their art.

I used to live in NY state (not NYC) and I found it great there. I love the United States. But the people there aren't as intelligent, they are very "big," people generally lack manners, and the food there sucks (except some things like NYC style pizza).

Japanese people are perhaps maybe even dumber depending on where you are, but the food is the greatest in the world (the price highest in the world), and the people have the greatest manners and etiquette. It is the only country in the world where I can honestly leave my front door wide open and not have to worry about a thing (that may change in a few decades or if I lived closer to Shinjuku or something).

Yeah, Japan has some good things. But there is an equal amount of crap too. The people are ignorant, they lack pride, they don't stand up for themselves so you can't have a decent conversation (they just agree with you on everything), too much noise (EVERYTHING talks, sometimes I want to tell the escalator to just SHUT UP!), and food costs toooooo much.

north east of the united states is more callous than the south. when i go back to like florida, georgia, alabama, mississippi, or texas, you'll notice that they are disgustingly nice and kind. hence the term "southern hospitality"-

South is also known for lynchings and extreme racism. They still hate blacks, they're extremely hostile towards Asians, and they still think that they won the civil war.

But Florida is nice. It's home to Universal Studios!!!

My history teacher is from the south. He's pretty nice, but he told us that his dad was a bit of a racist

Japa is a great countries in term of technology and economy. But Japan is certainly not the best country in the world due to the fact that they have commited great crimes against China and Korea in the past.

America has committed just as bad things in the past as well, sometimes worse. They have publically announced that certain countries like the Phillipines and Japan are "exotic" nations filled with "barbarians" and "savages."

America still does terrible things so you sure as hell can't say America is the best country in the world.

And you definitely can't rate a country NOW for what they did in the PAST.

No offsense to Japanese in here, but I think that Japan is overrated by most people.

First, Japan has lost most of its culture, it's not like it was before.
Second, Japanese do some wierd stuffs that break the rules of most Asian countries. They have wierd craps there that's not even part of their culture. They've evolved into a society that is so free, that the people would do anything that's so pervert that even Americans would say "yikes!"
Third, Japan is deffinately not the best country in the world. I would consider them the most racist country in Asia.

Not everything in Japan is like what you see on Anime.

If Japan was the best, they wouldn't:

1) have a declining birthrate.
2) be diplomatically isolated in East Asia
3) have the highest sucidal rates

any countries have their own pro and cons. generally, people like japan coz of its standard of living but japan is not perfect at all. there're other countries who have high standard of living also.
