Film star berates Indian media

Top Bollywood star Salman Khan has said he is "exploited" by the Indian media, and has blamed them for his "negative" off-screen portrayal.

Interviewed by the BBC Asian Network, the actor said "controversy after controversy" had been covered.

Khan said that while a section of the media wanted to write positive things about him, they were powerless.

The 41-year-old, who has a reputation for reckless behaviour, was found guilty earlier this year of poaching.

"There's a business section that wants to portray everything negatively so that they can sell magazines or get good top ratings on TV," Khan said of his "bad-boy" image.

'An example'

In June, the actor was charged with killing two black bucks, a protected antelope species, during a hunting trip in the state of Rajasthan in 1998.

And in April the actor was sentenced to a five-year jail term - currently under appeal - for a separate hunting incident also in Rajasthan.

He has always denied wrongdoing and is currently on bail while his appeal is being heard.

Khan said that his conviction was wrong, and that the judge only sentenced him because he wanted to make an example out of him.

"Apparently the judge said that openly," Khan said.

"They wanted to set an example out of me... Who knew the black buck? I mean today because of me, people know there's an endangered species of deer called black buck, well it's actually an antelope."

Slates fellow star

The poaching cases are not Salman Khan's first brush with the law. He is also facing trial in Mumbai (Bombay) in a 2002 hit-and-run case.

One person was killed and three others injured when Khan allegedly drove into a group of homeless people sleeping on a pavement.

Khan faces 10 charges, including causing death by negligent driving which carries two years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts.

In his interview with the BBC, the Bollywood icon also slated the latest movie offering of his friend, fellow Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.

He said that "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna" (Never Say Goodbye), was a "move away" from Shah Rukh Khan's typical roles and he had advised against it.

"There's a lot of people out there who like him, and he moved away from his image, but it didn't work," Khan said.

Salman Khan gave his interview after performing in a concert in the UK.

The interview with Salman Khan, his girlfriend Katrina Kaif and brother Sohail Khan will be broadcast on the BBC Asian Network's Gagan Grewal show on Friday 1 September at 1900 BST.

There is no thing as converting to Islam, one can only revert to Islam.
But how could you know ? Since your knowledge on Islam is quite poor.
Najjiah
isn't he connected to dawood ibrahim? he also is rumored to have been physically violent w/ aishwarya when they were together. all i know is there is no justice in this world when a man like salman can run over a homeless person on the street & barely get 2 hours in jail before he is released & the charges are dropped.

More Islamofacist theological propaganda. thumbsdown.gif

Your viewpoint assumes that everyone is born muslim, which is incorrect. Everyone is born human, without religion. Religion is given to them. If they choose to switch from one religion to another, its is called Conversion.

The fact of the matter is, Islam was created just like all other prophet driven religions. The son of ‘Abdu’llah ibn ‘Abdu’l-Muttalib (who later was given the name Muhammad) created the religion of Islam. Prior to him, the religion of the Arabs was Polytheistic and contained hundreds of gods (one of whom was named Allah, the god of the Moon). Henceforth, as a created religion, Islam is not natural to humans but is rather an aquired religion that is passed down through family heritage or Conversion.

Time to read up on your own religion buddy. icon_wink.gif

word...maybe when salman was young, he had nice bone structure and he has a nice nose...I'll give him that. I'm not into people that look like Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan. icon_redface.gif

People still refer to Sharmila Tagore as a Bengali Brahmin...so that's why I didn't know she converted.

^What's everybody's take on Hinduism and drinking? Is there actually a rule that you're not supposed to touch even wine? icon_confused.gif

It's culturally more acceptable among Hindu families abroad to drink, if you compare them to the average Desi Muslim family abroad. Even if a Hindu family doesn't drink, they still serve liquor for their guests at weddings/parties, while the Muslims I know don't.

Hinduism itself doesn't say anything against drinking, but culturally opinions on drinking vary from very open to very conservative.

In my family drinking is viewed as being ok (amongst Men) but I still don't drink, mostly due to health related issues.

Alcohol can be taboo in uber-conservative Hindu families, but if you compare those views to the South Asian Muslim community----You're going to find a higher amount of Hindu families that are okay with drinking socially. The same thing goes for Sikh families compared to Muslims, I think.

Some people believe there are regulative principles that forbid. I have notice some people inject their own conservative family principles and say you should not drink. Many Marathi Hindus believe its okay in moderation.

We drink up a storm at weddings. But things like casual drinking at home don't happen.

^Does that Marathi rule apply to girls?

I have seen some families where it's acceptable for the males of the household to drink, but not the females.

In our social circle though, some of the aunties drink and nobody says anything to me if I drink at Indian gatherings. icon_confused.gif I have even had uncles offer me drinks before. embarassedlaugh.gif

Yeah they do drink. Men would have mostly Johnny walker, but females drank usual one gin tonic. But these are usual casual get to together not building parties or birthday parties.
ExpressYourself
^Yeah they need to expand their selection of drinks at Indian parties...Johnny Walkers and gin tonics get so boring after awhile...

Over here, the margarita is the favorite auntie drink. Ewwww.......
