Steve Irwin dead
The naturalist and television star Steve Irwin has died in a diving accident in far north Queensland. He was 44.
Police say he was stung through the heart by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas.
He was filming a documentary when the accident occurred around midday AEST near the Low Isles.
A helicopter arrived with paramedics on board to try to resuscitate him, but it was too late.
Irwin's body is being taken to the morgue in Cairns.
His family are believed to be flying from Brisbane to Cairns this afternoon.
Irwin, who was was born in Victoria in 1962, inherited his love of reptiles from his father.
His father Bob was a keen reptile enthusiast and moved the family to Queensland in 1970 to open a small reptile park on the Sunshine Coast.
Irwin took over the family business in 1991 and grew it into Australia Zoo.
In 1992 he ventured into television, making the first series of the Crocodile Hunter.
When the program aired in the United States, he shot to international fame.
Irwin is survived by his wife Terri and two children.

I'm still shocked at Crocodile Hunter's death.
I was a big fan of Steve Irwin. He was hilarious, and a daredevil when it came to dealing with animals. But with the kind of dangerous stunts he pulls, it was bound to happen one day.
Rest In Peace, mate.

Good bye Steve. RIP mate.
I swear his death was by a stroke of god or whatever divine force. His death by a stingray is only the 3rd in Australia's history, odds of dying by a stingray are EXTREMELY low, thats what makes his death more shocking.
Still, can't beleive the guy is gone.

He did alot in the way of wildlife preservation and helped bring in money for endangered species protection. Great man, did more in his short life than a hundred other men.

They could worse off like being poached, depleted, endangered, or extinct. Oh yeah, thats a manly way to die, hit in the heart with a sharp point, its up on the list with getting mauled/gored or being pulled into huge gears.

"Worse" doesn't make "bad" any better. Would you tell a woman who was raped "Well, be glad, at least he didn't kill you. What a nice guy!" Seriously, if he wanted to help animals then he could have done all the things he was already doing (donating money, etc) without running around like an insane moron shoving his fingers up snakes butts. I never had any respect for that guy.

Gretchen, I think he needed the theatrics from his show to raise money for the wildlife causes. So, it's either extinction, or being annoyed by Steve Irwin. Actually, I'd choose extinction.

I don't think he would have had any regrets about his job. It's great that he died doing what he loved and not die as an old man regretting his life's work.

Why do you even care? Are you a devout animal rights activist? LOL
Animals may find Irwin to be an annoying @$$ but at least he isn't that all pretentious. He does what he's doing to obtain financial backing for animal and environmental protection policies and programs. I'm not a full-on conservationist like Irwin, but even I can see the reason behind trading a few animal finger rapings (for entertainment which translates to $$$) for the prospect of protecting MANY MORE other animals from death.

My condolences to the family.
What's funny is that when I use to go fishing at this beach just south of Sorrento Quays in the evening big stingrays would swim around your ankles. I'll be staying on the beach from now on tho.

Crocodile Hunter's death caught on video
AP - Tue Sep 5, 5:52 AM ET
CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin was videotaped pulling a poisonous stingray barb from his chest in his last moments of life, officials said Tuesday, as tributes poured in for TV's "Crocodile Hunter." Police said there was nothing suspicious about Irwin's death and no evidence he provoked the animal. Irwin, 44, was stabbed through the heart on Monday while snorkeling with a stingray during filming of a new TV program on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Ouch..
RIP Steve Irwin
