We were the only ones to bring in linguistic influence when their languages were developing. I'm not saying all they got was South Asian, but a great deal of it was. Their religions came to them from South Asia (They were Hindus in the pre-Buddhist days (the Thai king even to this day is associated with the Hindu god Rama). Today they are Theravada Buddhists (which was the primary from of Buddhism of SA until the Mughals killed off the religion in our regions) and Muslims (Which they got through Mongol and Indian merchants)). Also in Universities, Asian Studies are divided into South and Southeast Asian Studies and East Asian Studies.

Actually, that's nothing to brag about.

I have one interest alone in knowing this and that is that so many East Asian people say South Asians aren't Asian. This statistic means that the majority are being grouped as something else altogether, which quite frankly is just plain stupid..

Middle-Easterns would never accept us as being genetically closer to them (and I wouldn't want them to either). Go to any Persian, Afghan or Arab forum...and they even denigrate Paki Pathans who kiss their @$$ and post their pictures.

Fair Indians still have rounded, soft Desi features. I can tell them apart from Arabs, who tend to have more prominent features...while some look white and some look like black-white mixes/

Arabs can look like anything. Some look Desi, but Arabs I know claim that they look different from Desis ON AVERAGE. I think these girls looks strongly "Arab"...if I were to describe the stereotype.

when arabs say they look differnt from indians they say it cause they find themselves looking differnt from tamils or south indians or guyanese or trini indian...irakis egyptians , most iranians are just like north indians.

I've been to Irani and Arab forums where they diss North Indians. They know what Punjabis are, because Indian Punjabis and Pakis come to those forums and post their pictures.

Some Afghans don't even want to accept the Pathans in Pakistan and India as one of them, because they feel Paki Pathans look too "South Asian."

And also according to the UNESCO, Iran and Afghanistan are South Asian, so you don't need to argue about Persians being Indian-like, its already recognized

iranians are more closer to us north indian and pakis then chinese or south east asians...there are lots of farsi words in hindi... iran and india has influenced each others culture since historical times. we can understand persian but we cant understand chinese language.

Honestly I think SEA is very similar to West and South Indians.

There are South Asian-looking Iranis, but all these Irani-Americans keep telling me that Desi-looking Iranis are a minority, and that the "standard Iranian look" is different from the North Indian look......which they think that all Indians (north, south, west) look the same.


I've seen few Iranians and they look either Southern Europeanish or semitic, so I can't really comment as a whole.....I'm just going by what Iranians themselves are telling me. I figure they know more about their own people.

well they dont get mad cause they are just like us....actually this iranian was telling me wot some punjabi words means while we were listing to punjabi channel ....words like hazar are actually farsi words.

People in the northern Indian subcontinent and Iranian peninsula are physically and culturally related, due to a shared pre-historic Indo-Iranian history and mutual Indian-Persian influence for many centuries after that. That's why Iran and Afghanistan have been included in Southern Asia, despite being Middle Eastern countries.

Iranian celebs usually look more Semitic or Mediterranean but the average Iranian usually looks more like a Pakistani. However, many Iranians probably wouldn't want to admit it.

What about the non-North Indians that look North Indian? Can they claim to be physically related to Iranians too?

I personally feel more inclined towards a non-North Indian than an Iranian anyday though.

I also get along better with Southern Indians and Sri Lankans but I wasn't really talking about them.

Most Northern Indians would probably agree with you about having more commonalities with Southern Indians than Iranians.

I was just pointing out that Iranians do have commonalities with Northern Indians but culturally have little in common with Southern Indians.
