I brought this up because someone posted the videos of how some people felt about Korean-Americans in LA.
I find it risky to talk about what happened in the LA Riots when someone explains a wrong view about Korean-Americans. If I do, I would get accused of being a racist. When I was in high school, my teacher showed us videos of the LA Riots to discuss the race problems in America. Unfortunately, the only video of the Koreans was the part where they tried to defend their supermarket. To most of the class, it looked like Koreans were the only ones who were shooting. They didn't show the people trying to rob them, and the defenseless Koreans who lost their stores. I never referred to the people who robbed Koreans as a certain race, and I don't hate an entire race. I just explained what the Koreans have been going through. This was new to the rest of the class. They didn't believe it because they didn't see it in the news, and they were influenced by most of the people around them who thought Koreans were the problem. They thought I was saying my racist view of what happened in LA.
I'm wondering how the Americans in this forum feel about Korean-Americans in the LA Riots.
Btw- I talked about what happened in NY in this forum before. I was explaining what I heard in the news around 8 years ago, and I'm not making things up.
Which is why i am glad to live in Canada.

Here's what Ms. Mira Jang has to say about the LA Riots. I completely agree with what she said.
QUOTE
Jang says the rioting was fueled in part by police abuse and economic inequalities between blacks, Latinos, and Asians. But today she charges that something more was also at work. She claims the black-Korean conflict was more a "ruse" concocted by the media and supported by the government to steer blame away from the real culprits. The culprits, she believes, were government and corporate neglect of poor and underrepresented residents – and local TV outlets that wanted a return on their investments in new helicopter and mobile-based cameras and wittingly or unwittingly exploited the black-Korean conflict for ratings.
"Koreans became pawns in this game, as people of color fought for the crumbs rather than their due piece of the American pie," says Jang, now a 24-year-old field deputy to Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, a Democrat whose district includes Koreatown.

all my years in school. Whenever LA riots comes up. They only talk about rodney king beating. Never ever the looting and destroying of Korean stores. Koreans arent even mentioned. Not even Koreatown at all.
La riot- Rodney King beating. End of story
They go no further than that. I was pretty surprised and hurt a little bit. Seeing that what happened to my people (i live in Koreatown by the way) is ignored. Ignored all the time. Nobody gives a crap.

Yeah dude Thats pretty sad
It shows even if you are hardworking people, if you don't have any power then you are going to get abused and used like sh*t.
I hope Korean-Americans in LA or anywhere else can muster some political power so they won't be victim of this kind of thing in the future.

i felt hurt because its history of the city that i live in. I didnt see anything that went on in the riots cuz i think we were in the safe part of Koreatown. But still, You know its my people and my city. To us Koreans, that affected us largely. You know at that time the Koreans came to America and opened up stores to make a living. Couldnt even speak english. Then bam on 1992. you have these people storm into Koreatown and destroy all the stores and start looting and stealing. All across Koreatown.
You know what else. I saw clips and footages of what the cops did in the scene. Guess what they did. They did "Nothing". Thats right. I saw clips of cops just standing there chattering and watching all these people breaking windows and taking whatever they want. The cops just F*cking stood there like nothing was going on. They are like only 20 feet away from the riot scene and just watch. I was gettin very pissed. All this crap happened. And yet not mentioned once ever in any history you find about Los Angeles.
You know what the only thing they say about Koreans is in the LA riot? The incident about the Korean lady who shot a black girl for walking out with a drink she didnt pay for. Thats the only one thing they talk about.
You know what the funny thing is. They call it the "LA riot" but think about it. Where was the LA riot takin place at? Koreatown! They never ever mention anything about Koreatown and what happened. Koreans were armed with guns from handguns to rifles like ak-47's to protect their stores. They had all these shootings and drive-by's in Koreatown. It was a big big event in Koreatown history. Yet its never ever mentioned.
See what i mean. It's like people always sh*t on Koreans man. I aint no Korea freak or some patriotic guy. Sometimes i get embarrassed as a Korean and wish i wasnt Korean. But there are times i get really defensive about how my people get treated. Its like i may talk sh*t to my parents but if someone does or say anything about my family. I get pretty pissed. You guys feel me? Serious stuff. We all human

It is poltically incorrect to blame those who attacked Korean businesses. You either have to A) Blame the Koreans for not being more understanding B) Blame whitey for forcing the rioters to attack Korean businesses

there really was no reason to burn every store down in koreatown and start looting. there were like thousands of people. latino people tag along as well. there is a big population of latinos in koreatown. who doesnt want free stuff.
plus the police dont help at all. they actually help those who are looting by not stopping them. the koreans are surprised. they have nothin else to do besides protect their stores themselves. the police pissed me off the most.

um yeah. In LA koreatown is pretty f*ckin big as hell. Its hella bigger than J town (little tokyo). I been there like once. But Koreatown La is big big big. If you lived in southern california, Everybody knows what Koreatown LA is. Pretty much throughout US most asians know about Ktown. Whenever someone says, "Ktown" its almost always the Ktown in La california. Its like where Koreans first came to in america. Its a historical place for Korean-Americans.

after the riot wuz over, they had held a town-hall meeting for blacks and koreans to come together and consolidate their differences, one by one making speeches of how they felt and what should be done to better their relationship. though ample notices were announced & bequeathed, only a single korean showed up compared to the hordes of blacks that attended, after that they said fu-k it no more meetings.
