Economic growth is one thing, but people rarely talk about is the wages of the normal Vietnamese workers. Would economic growth rate equals to the growth rate of the wages? How long would it take for a Vietnamese family to earn enough to be able to buy a brand new Toyota (which costs about $60,000 USD) instead of using the motorbikes?

$60,000 for a Toyota ??? eek.gif

Correct that typo, dude. For 20K, one can have a brand new Toyota here in the States. For much less so in Vietnam, for it is much closer to Japan than the States. Less shipping fees, correct? icon_neutral.gif

Whoa!!!

Is it due to the tariffs slapped by the government on foreign goods? icon_sad.gif

That's some hefty taxation if that's the case.

How much is a brand new Toyota cost in the Phillipines?

A brand new loaded Camry costs about US$27,000.

Although the much less expensive Korean cars are gaining popularity in the Philippines.

Usually the upper middle class are the ones who drive Camrys over there.

According to the magazine "The Economist," Vietnam just pulled ahead in having less poverty at 10% of the population, and a higher percentage of children receiving a highschool education compared to the Philliphines.

Vietnam probably has a more even income distribution than the Philipines. As for the quality of secondary education in Vietnam, there are those who suffer and there are those who suffer and scream bloody murder about its quality. The ones who are not suffering are attending foreign secondary schools.

Good for Vietnam. beerchug.gif

Communist countries are much better at wealth distribution than capitalist countries.

Allow me to share some data I gathered. Please don't take this the wrong way, this is for comparison's sake only.

Literacy Rate (% of the population)
Philippines: 92.6
Vietnam: 90.3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count...y_literacy_rate

Infant Mortality Rate (deaths/1,000 live births0
Philippines: 22.81 (2006 est.)
Vietnam: 25.14 (2006 est.)
https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbo...r/2091rank.html

Size of Economy
Philippines: ranked as 27th largest economy out of 232 countries of the world.
Vietnam: ranked as 41st with approximately the same population as the Philippines.
https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbo...r/2001rank.html

With Vietnam's 8%+ growth rate, Vietnam should be able catch up to the Philippines in no time. biggthumpup.gif
Best of luck to both of our countries and may we achieve our goals for a better future of our countries and our people. icon_wink.gif

Whoa b!tch...now you are pushing it! Vietnam might have a lower poverty rate but it is a communist country...there is no freedom. and what about English literacy...almost every Filipino is bilingual. Philippines has the 2nd highest Asian income in the USA and the Philippines is 11th place (check aneki.com) in college attenders... you guys are way farther than the Phils...and about the Vietnam can beat the Philippines in sports; hmmm who won the last SEA GAMES!!!! Phils did!

Philippines has the 2nd highest Asian income in the USA?

Are you sure about this?
Sirikittong
I believe in the progress of the two countries. The Philippines are doing great right now, so is Vietnam. But the Philippines shouldnt compare themselves with Vietnam--as it already is ahead of Vietnam. The Philippines should emulate other progressed nation states in the likes of Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore etc.

Vietnam has a long way to go, I hope their economy stays hot.

I know Vietnam and Philippines can do it. ASEAN GROWTH!

I believe that's true. It is either the Filipino or the Indian has the highest income of all the Asian in the U.S.

I don't Indian or Filipino have the highest income in US, but I saw many rich Vietnamese in America icon_smile.gif
StephenDedalusFromAsia
http://www.ameredia.com/demographics/index.html

based on 2000 census

males, median income

Indians- $51,904
Japanese- $50,876
Chinese- $44,831
Fil-Ger
If you're going to provide stats on both countries' representations in the US, provide them all:

Ranked by bachelor's degree percentage (page 12, http://www.census.gov/prod/2004pubs/censr-17.pdf):

1. Chinese: 48.1%
2. Filipino: 43.8%
2. Korean: 43.8%
4. Japanese: 41.9%
5. Thai: 38.6%
6. Vietnamese: 19.4%
7. Cambodian: 9.2%
8. Laotian: 7.7%
9. Hmong: 7.5%

I listed oriental Asians only.

Median Earnings:

Median Family Income (page 16):
Philippines: $65,189 (2nd highest among oriental asians)
Vietnamese: $47.103 (6th)

Median earnings by sex (page 15):
Philippines:
Male: $35,560 (4th)
Female: $31,450 (3rd)

Vietnam:
Male: $31,258 (6th)
Female: $24,028 (6th)

Poverty rate (page 17):
Philippines: 6.3% (1st! surprised the hell out of me)
Vietnamese: 16% (6th)

Anyways, Vietnam is growing at a much faster rate than the Philippines. The Philippines is encumbered by all its corruption and it's crazy geography.

I've known more Vietnamese than Filipinos in high school. Cool guys all around.

I wish them good leaders and success. What the Philippines needs.
SoCal
biggrin.gif I will be very surprised if the Vietnamese Americans surpass the Filipino Americans in population in the United States by 2010.
