Even though I don't follow the korean events extensively, I would have to say that hes doing nice job of wrecking the whole economy as well as endangering national security.
whats yours?

His only success has been to place 'his' people into vital positions in the government. Off the top of my head, the defense minister, prime minister, and of course the formation of the Defense Acquisition Agency which allows the president and his people to directly meddle with defense matters.

Next presidential election is 2007.
In my opinion he has neither a coherent vision nor competency. His economic policy keeps going in opposite directions. First he was in favor of more socialism and restrictions in capital and the real estate market; now he is pro-FTA and loosening his real estate policy, which had the opposite effect to what he intended.
He talks out of both sides of his mouth on the alliance with the US.
He is obsequious in his dealings with the North, publicly declaring that he will give them everything and ask for nothing in return.
His policy of ignoring the human rights situation in NK and his attempts to muzzle the media when they are critical of him tarnish his previous long legacy as a battler for human rights.

i think president Roh is a man of deep convictions. i honestly dont think hes as shallow as everyone thinks, the only little grudge i hold against him and his government is that the economy isnt progressing in flying colors, but nevertheless it is growing at a moderate pace which unfortunately most people see as incompetent.
i'm aware that his handling with china about the distortion of Koguryeo and Balhae is too passive while not representing the sentiments of 48 million koreans, but i get a feeling theres a reason behind it all, something so significant and worthwhile that it would otherwise jeopardize a favorable outcome for the whole nation if the cards are not played right.
Roh is a good man, i really dont think he makes critical decisions without any reflections. Theres only a year left until the end of his tenure, let him do his thing

I always thought he was a lot like Carter. A really good guy, but sucks at everything when he's a president.
Next election.. lol... it won't matter because it's going to be a Hannara Party candidate. It's between Park Geun-Hae and Yi Myung Bak.
My dad and I were talking about it the other day. He hates Roh Moo Hyun too. But when I told him about that congressman (Hannara party) who said he wished that Korea had the luck of experiencing the same thing Thailand did (coup), he got angry and shouted that whoever that congressman was, he needs to be locked up for conspiracy and treason. Understandably so, considering my dad was in college during the 70's & 80's and he went to Korea University (Go-Ryuh University).
I would think that Yi Myung Bak would make the lesser of two evils (lol what election isn't like that?). Park Geun Hae (daughter of Park Jung Hee), when elected, would give Hannara party a blank check to go back to the era of Park Jung Hee. For the PJH lovers out there, remember what PJH himself had said once: "I hope that this country never produces another soldier like me."
Economy is waning, yes, but is that really the justification to go "Well, democracy sucks, so lets go back to the good old 70's."? PJH did revive the economy (largely through Vietnam War), but everything else about the country went to the gutters. And that economic revival was ruined by Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo, two coup regime that basically screwed Korea over and over and over and over .... X 1000 again.

Hi, I am Korean American who has deep interests in Korean politics and how the country is running. I occassionally read about Korean news on Internet and hardly notice anything good written about President Roh on the news media. Things that I have read regarding him is how Korean economy is doing bad since he took office, how his NK policy is failing, how he speaks without thinking, his dismal job approval rate.
I don't know him much to criticize or praise him but I wished he would make out to be a fine president when he took office. Coming from humble background without even college degree, I expected he would invest hefty amount of time addressing the needs of poor class, narrowing rich/poor gap, and revitalize Korean economy. It seems there hasn't been much improvements on that area.
I have 2 questions for people who live in Korea and are knowledgeable in Korean politics.
1. After almost 4 years of President Roh's tenure as a chief of Korea, what is people saying about him on the street? I would like to hear both good and bad commments about him people are saying.
2. Do you believe he would be remembered as better president than either Young-Sam Kim or Dae-Jung Kim? If yes or no, why?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

I don't talk about politics much with people, but I haven't met anybody in the last 2-3 months who thinks he is doing a good job. I know he gets about 20-25% approval in polls but I certainly haven't met any of those 25%. Lots of people say they regret voting for him.
I think he wil be remembered as either mediocre or disastrous. Mediocre if NK doesn't have nukes; disastrous if they do and there's a war.
