My Malu friend was telling me that light skin and even light eyes is common among certain South Indian ethnic groups, like the Iyengars, the Konkani Brahmins, the coorgis, the Tulus (Aish's people) and the Nairs?

I don't know too much about the various sub-ethnicities in the South though. Feel free to correct me.




If that look is "retained," then how come Indians that look like this have "typical Indian-looking" kids, parents, and sibling? Some people say my mom looks Indo-Iranian, but why do I have dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes? We're both of the same blood.

I hope you are not implying that only the Indo-Iranian look is beautiful, b/c other looks can be appealing too.

Light skin and eyes are common among the Konkanis(who are for the most part drop dead gorgeous), the Tulus(Aishwarya does but the Shetty siblings/Sunil Shetty don't...) and Coorg is just an area where the Tulus live. These people(Konkanis, Tulus) are located on the Mangalore Coast of South India in Karnataka. These ethnic groups are a very small minority in South India where people are darksinned, dark eyed and dark haired for the most part.
The iyengars and the nairs are probably lighter skinned than the average south indian(being brahmin and all) but i havent heard about any above average rates of light eyes or hair among them.

I've only seen 2 Konkani chicks in my life though, but they were pretty.

About the coorg thing....I know this girl that identifies herself as "coorgis," so I thought it was some type of distinct identity.

Can anyone also confirm that Rekha is half-Tamilian/Half-Telegu? I read somewhere that her dad was a Brahmin...don't know what her mom is.

I don't know...I've heard that the Konkani Brahmins are descendants of Kashmiris, and that most South Indian Brahmins also have North Indian roots?

I wouldn't be surprised though, since Indians migrate a lot. A lot of people probably have ancestry to a region that is different from where they live.

Hell, I didn't even know that my ancestors were from Rajasthan until last year..... Abd my other friend learned that her caste roots go back to W.Bengal, when her family is actually from UP.


When you tell people your sub-caste, I think that's what would be your true ethnicity, instead of saying what part of India you're from.

I've heard the same. The Tulus are speculated to have Kashmiri, portuguese, aryan, greek etc. heritages but i believe the kashmiri one the most.

I don't have pictures of Konkani brahmins but out of the most beautiful women i've ever seen in my life, 3 were Konkanis.

I googled and found out that Leena Chandravekar is konkani too. She just proves my point.

Wow konkanis related to kashmirs and tulus to greek!!! What do u think we are stupid... I have travelled all over india and majority of marathis, gujratis, bengalis and biharis look similar and punjabis look nothing like film stars okay.. Most of them are dark maybe 1 to 2 shades lighter than rest but majority are dark.. Iam half tulu we are south indians understand. Konkanis don't even resemble kashmiris .. posting pics of a film actress and expecting us to believe.. i have spent my childhood among mangaloreans and konkans and they do not resemble kashmiris.

India has undergone plently of mixing between the races and even the most fairest of the indian does not look iranic and please the persian look is so manly and such long noses..

I have never met a punjabi with blue or green eyes brown yes not blue or green but i have met tam brahms with this coloured eyes and even marathi brahmins. Also met many low castes with fair skin..Skin color has nothing to do with caste or region anymore..

This is the age of internet and satellite television and news channels we see ordinary people from all regions of india and they look similar in color.

konkanis are south indians (from karnataka) are supposedly mixed with portuguese blood, although i know some that say they are not. are tulus from andhra pradesh? that's what i've heard, but i'm not sure.

i actually know more south indians with light eyes than north indians...and i agree with u about the skin color generalizations, they're completely ridiculous...there r very dark skinned ppl in the farthest reaches of north india, and pakistan, and light skinned ppl all the way in kerala, and even in sri lanka. basically, u can find all shades all over india.

and this north indian vs south indian bs is so stupid and tired. we're all indian, and no one outside india even differentiates btwn the two. we need solidarity. i always felt the lack of solidarity among us is partly what holds us back from achieving our full potential as a people.

All what I said is that "I heard." I never said that I believed it. However, it was actually a South Indian boy who told me that Konkanis were Kashmiri migrants. Don't just assume that only North Indians are perpetuating that.......


As a brown-skinned, dark-haired, dark-eyed North Indian girl, why would I say that most North Indians have light eyes, light hair, and light skin? If anything, I actually take it as a compliment to be mistaken for a Southie (which has happened on several occasions), b/c some of the hottest women come from there.....


But, just like it's possible for lower-caste people and Southies to have light eyes, it's possible for so-called Punjabis or any other North Indian ethnicity to have light eyes. Just b/c you have never seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Unfortunately, there are North Indians that think all South Indians are ugly, b/c they just ironically happened to see a couple of homely Southies..... BUT, that doesn't mean it's true! It's not fair for them to say that b/c they haven't seen every South Indian out there, just like you haven't seen every Punjabi out there. So, it would be equally fallacious to say that a Punjabi can't have light eyes.


BTW, no offense to anyone, but I'm kind of getting irritated at people thinking that North Indian=Punjabi. There are UPites, Rajasthanis, Biharis, Haryanavis, HPites, Uttaranchal's..........And no, not all of these North Indian groups necessarily look like the prototypical Punjabi, Pakistani or Kashmiri.


I'm not saying that you personally think this, but I've noticed it around other ABD's in general....Just pointing it out to anyone that thinks so. Some ABD's don't even know what UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan is. It's like they think Punjab, Gujarat, and the South make up the entire India.

Actually, I think ABD's in the West are more concerned about that than people in India. And, it's not just between North and South. There are ABD's that fight over Punjabis vs. Gujus, Pakis Vs. Indians, Punjab vs. the rest of India, etc.......

Western culture is more preoccupied with appearance, so it makes sense for ABD's to fight over which Desi ethnicity is the best-looking, the tallest, the lightest, etc.

The first thing a person asks me when they meet me is, "What type of Indian are you?" I'm not just talking about aunties and uncles. People in my generation do the exact same thing and even make retarded comments such as, "Oh...no wonder you're tall"...or "Oh...no wonder you can dress nice."

WTF? Why the heck does it matter what I am, and what does what part of India my parents are from have to do with how nice a person dresses/height/etc?

I agree but every time i say north indians include bengalis, biharis and the rest people say that only punjabis kashmiris and himachalis/haryanvis count as north indians. I think it happened in this topic too before.

I didn't know I had ancestors were from Assam until last year. I've always thought I was just a typical Bengali, since I don't look Assamese at all.
