Is Shillong in Assam???

And guys..this is what Udita told to the journalist about her origin.

She owes her unique looks to her mixed parentage. Her mother's from Shillong, her father's from Benaras and her grandmother is Nepalese. A fresh face and a waif-like frame; "I am aware I don't look like the typical Bollywood heroine. But that's the way I am and I am not going to get any implants or anything else."

Shillong remained the capital of undivided Assam until the creation of the new state of Meghalaya in January 21, 1972 when Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya.

Benares is in UP (Uttar Pradesh). But, saying you are from UP is pretty vague. We don't consider ourselves a single ethnicity. There are all kinds of communities living in UP, like Kashmiris, Bengalis, Punjabis, Rajputs, Jats (different from Jatts), Sindhis, Malus, etc, because it's a central and integrated state.

If her father is a native UPite, I think there are some ethnic groups in the NorthEastern part of UP that have slight Mongloid features.

Well I actually meant I don't look anything like a "typical" Assamese (I would consider Udita Goswami to have a typical Assamese look, although she's half Assamese). There are many Assamese that don't have the average Assamese look, because of the mixed ancestry.

Sylhet, the region of Bangladesh my parents are from, was also apart of undivided Assam prior to 1947, although I just found that out last year. But for most of their histories, the states of Sylhet and Meghaleya were always sandwiched between Bengal and Assam.

Seems that you guys know much about India and Indians, Well I will tell you some misconceptions i read on last page,

1.Shilong is Capital of Meghalaya, Meghalaya is one among 7 states of north east, Meghalaya means the home of clouds, it has a city Cherapunji where it rains everyday, and Meghalaya was terrorist prone area, some 4-5 years back some bodo etc. were active terror groups.

2. Rajputs are not punjabis, they are Rajasthani. and in some parts of Himachal pradesh. Perity is HOT, that hunber girl. and this govitrikar girl is marathi ( mostly all maharashtrian ppl have this "kar" in their family name it shows their villege like koppi+kar means she belongs to koppi villege, same usgaonkar, karmakar and blah blah)

3. Hey no more talks about Udita, man is she pretty? there are girls like manisha, kariena and much more, Isha koppikar is also hot, spicy gal she is.

'

Sweetie, I'm Rajput too.

I'm not Punjabi. If all Rajputs were Punjabis, then why did my mom's family threw a fit when she married my Punjabi step-dad?

There are Rajputs that may have migrated to Punjab, but all Rajputs descended from Rajasthan. All of your Pakistani Punjabi friends are basically descendents of Rajasthani migrants.

Rajasthan/Rajputana is known as the land of Rajputs.

There are also many Rajputs living in UP, MP, Bihar and even Gujarat.

Even though there are some Rajputs living in Punjab, Rajputs in general are associated as a distinct group from Punjabis.

I've said millions of times that I'm a UP Rajput, but my great-great grandparents are from Rajasthan.

All of the Rajputs I know see themselves as being different from Punjabis.

Even if a Rajput is from Punjab, they are not a native Punjabi.

In India, when you say you're "Rajput," it's an underlying assumption that you originated in Rajasthan.

I always figured people knew that Rajputs were specifically non-Punjabis (Rajasthani).I mean, c'mon, it has the word "Raj" in it. ..But now I got to make a speech and specify that my ancestors were from Rajasthan, and that they migrated to UP 300 years ago...ughhhh

But, don't Rajasthanis and other Rajputs make up a tiny minority in the Desi diaspora? Since there are more Pakistanis and Punjabis, maybe that's also why people get confused.

Since Hindu Rajputs have the last name "Singh," that could be also why people get Sikhs and Rajputs confused....

It depends on where you live. For instance, rajputs in Gujarat speak Gujarati.

But since the majority of the Rajput population is directly from Rajasthan, they either speak Hindi or some type of Rajasthani influenced dialect.

As for appearance, the Hindu Rajputs I've seen look different from the "prototypical" Punjabi. SOME Rajputs have light skin and light eyes, but having light skin and light eyes doesn't necessarily make you look Punjabi.

However, the Pakistani Muslim Rajputs do look very Punjabi, but that's probably b/c their ancestors assimilated into the Pakistani Punjabi population during migration.

By the way, ndnboi, Hindu Rajputs also see themselves as being different from Muslim Rajputs. I even heard a Hindu Rajput uncle calling Muslim Rajputs "posers" icon_redface.gif

If nobody believes me about Rajputs not being Punjabi, here's a site about the history of Rajputs.

http://www.rajputsamaj.net/rajyavardhansingh.htm

Rajputs, sanskrit word meaning son of a king (rajputra), dominant people of Rajputana, an historic region now almost coextensive with the state of Rajasthan, NW India. The Rajputs are mainly Hindus of the warrior caste but their are also Muslim Rajputs spread over North-West India and Pakistan;

http://www.indtravel.com/rajasthan/rajas.html

Rajasthan is renowned for its great monuments, exquisite art and culture. Rajasthan thus became the homeland of these groups of warrior clans, collectively called Rajputs, who dominated this region for over a thousand years.

yeah shes really beautiful love2.gif
and no i didnt know she was half british, but i knew she was half european in some way hehe

heres an article about it (and also of joshi too) - i think its basically about mixed indians

Actresses of mixed parentage

LAST year, the film-going public in India saw the debut of a new face in Yash Chopra’s Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. Of course, the kernel of the story was taken from the Hollywood film My Best Friend’s Wedding. But the story was turned around completely to suit Indian sentiments and sensibilities. With this film, Sanjana, or Tulip Joshi, a young, good-looking model, made her entry into Hindi films. Tulip is half-Indian and half-Lebanese by birth. Her debut in Hindi films brought back to the film industry memories of its earliest days — the thirties — when mixed parentage actresses like Ruby Myers and Nadia ruled the roost.

"Of course, I am born of mixed parentage, but I was born and educated in India," says Tulip Joshi, who was given the name Sanjana for her film career, "I have lived in Mumbai all my life and went to the Jamnabai Narsee School. I went to Mithibai College in Juhu and graduated in food science and chemistry. I am very much a Mumbaikar!"

Talking about her parents’ love marriage, Tulip says that her Gujarati father, Kishore Joshi, owns an export business and often travels to West Asian countries. "In the early seventies, he used to travel frequently to Lebanon for business. My mother, whose maiden name was Zabel Hayekian, worked in the reception office of the hotel where he usually stayed. Over the months, they both fell in love and were married in 1972. My mother came to live in Mumbai after her marriage. I was brought up as a normal Indian child. My parents are Hindu and Christian and I practice both religions. For me, this is not a problem because I feel God is the same for all."

Tulip’s life took a turnaround when she entered the Femina Miss India Contest in 2000. "I did not make it to the list of winners. But I was noticed by many ad agencies. Offers to model poured in and soon, I became a busy model. I did the Smirnoff campaign, the Siyaram shoot and the Vicks campaign. I worked in the video made to pay a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan which had a rural background. I also did the Pepsi campaign for the South.

"But my entry into films was a mere chance. I was a friend of the young woman who married Aditya Chopra, the son of director Yash Chopra. The family saw me at the wedding and gave me numerous screen tests and auditions before I could qualify for a role in their new film. I trained in Hindi diction and in acting in Feroze Khan’s studio. Then I acted in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. A few films have been offered to me after that but I have been cautious. Actually, I love modelling and the ad world. The work here is time bound and easier than acting in films. Also, I am a graduate of food science and chemistry. I want to put my education to use and get into the restaurant business. I want to do just a few films only with people I know."

Padma Lakshmi As opposed to Tulip Joshi, Padma Lakshmi, who has been in the limelight for her role in the forthcoming film Boom — to be directed by Kaizad Gustad and produced by Ayesha Shroff — is the daughter of a Keralite father and a European mother. She lived with her grandparents in Chennai after the divorce of her parents and her mother’s return to the USA. Later, she too moved to the West and was educated there. Padma was ambitious to become a supermodel in the West and was ‘discovered’ by a photographer in Spain while still a teenager. However, a car accident in Malibu left a horrible seven-inch welt on her arm. "I thought with this ghastly scar, I could never make it to the ramp," she recalls, "I used layers of make up to hide it till Helmut Newton, show producer, said that I should present myself as I was. Thus, the scar became my brand statement. I was known as the woman with the long snake-like scar on the arm. Once I got over my insecurity about the scar, I modelled in Paris and Italy and because of my fluent Italian, was given a role in the famous Italian TV show Domenica In. I was soon a name in Europe and magazines like Vogue carried huge spreads about me."

However, It was her pairing with controversial author Salman Rushdie which brought her into world headlines. Ever since she was seen with him at parties and events in the USA, tabloids in the USA, UK and India began to carry pictures of the couple and Padma Lakshmi soon became a famous face and celebrity in India. Then last summer, she moved to India to stay with her grandfather and the Indian media showered her with attention and adulation. Though Padma had done films like The Caribbean before, her film career in India is a fresh start. "Though Caribbean was a failure," she recalls, "I had to put on 20 pounds for this film. To lose this weight, I innovated fatless recipes and then thought of writing the book Easy Exotic. The book was a fluke but it became a runaway success. I was featured on Food Network in America to promote my book and ended up hosting the Network’s Planet Food show and Padma’s Passport on Melting Pot.

"Last year, when I came to India, the media paired me with designer Anand Jon. But this is just gossip. I wear few designer clothes. Since I have met Salman, I have almost had a new birth. We make an interesting couple because both of us have interesting and somewhat controversial careers and lives. When I met him, I saw that he believed in me even more I did not myself. This was a pleasant surprise for a model like me. I began to work hard and achieved my own fame on my own merit. I love him for making me realise my own potential. Now I am working to complete Boom and I hope it succeeds. I know models have an elusive identity. I want to turn this myth over and prove that I am made of sterner stuff."

Though Tulip and Padma Lakshmi are two recent entrants to Bollywood, the phenomenon of mixed parentage actors making a name in Hindi films is not new. Long decades ago, when, ‘good family’ girls and boys did not get into films, mixed parentage women like Ruby Myers, Fearless Nadia and even Helen made their mark in the cinema world and gave India some memorable archival films.

did you make this post in every other 'hottest girls' thread too?

Sorry for the double post...

But, didn't you say a long time ago that RD was retarded? You can't trust what they say.....
I'm on RD too, and me and another Hindu Rajasthani guy let everybody know that Rajputs are originally from Rajasthan in this thread.
http://forums.ratedesi.com/showthread.php?...light=Rajasthan

I guess the Paki Rajputs have been living in Punjab for so long that they choose to acknowledge themselves as Punjabi.

But that doesn't mean you forget where your roots come from. icon_confused.gif

retarded yes but would they lie about their ethnicity? confused.gif

oh ok never mind. So their roots are from Rajasthan?

it's not the makeup, it can only do so much...indian girls in general have big eyes and fuller lips...not all, but a lot of them do. the makeup just enhances those features but it doesnt create them.
