That's why I asked where Anu Agarwal was from, because UP has a LOT of Agarwals.

yeah but there are marathi agarwals too. but agarwal is a punjabi name, for the most part. haryana is quite close to punjab so that could be it.

My mom said that the Punjabi Agarwals, Guptas and Mittals aren't native Punjabis. She said that everyone in India generally knew that their roots go back to UP, but wikipedia says that they originated from the a part that borders with UP/Haryana.

There are more Punjabi Agarwals here in America, because Punjabis have a much higher population in the West.

In my town and on my visit to India, the Agarwals were UPites.

The UP Agarwals/Agrawals don't consider themselves Punjabi or claim that they have Punjabi ancestry.

I never said kayasthas originated in UP only. Nandita Das is a Bengali Kayastha, lol. And Kayasthas and even some Rajputs live in Eastern UP too.


And you're right, I don't think any caste or any regional ethnicity is "pure." I've said so many times that you can have diversity within just one Indian family. While I'm at it, I even know two UP Agarwals that look more "chinesey" than Shruti.


Maybe Shruti's mom is an NE ethnicity OR maybe her ancestors assimilated with the rest of the NE population. There are Southies with North Indian roots/ancestry, but they still look South Indian. Historians think that this is because their ancestors inter-married with the natives. But then you also got some of those Konkanis that still look like your stereotypical Kashmiri. LOL, you got the same historians saying that these "Southies" maintained their roots by strictly marrying within their sect.

All kinds of things are possible.

In Wikipedia, she's listed as a a famous kayastha. Kayasthas is a sub-caste/ethnic sect and isn't the same thing as Kshatriyas.

I shouldn't have assumed that she was Bengali, because that's just something I've heard. I don't know if that's true.

A Bengali friend told me that Das was a Bengali last name and a last name for Assamese that migrated from Bengal. But he could be wrong about her.

Express urself i have seen many of her interviews where she has stated that she is half gujrati and half oriya. Also if u google around u will find plently of articles where in she says that she is mistaken for a bengali but is actually half oriya and half gujju.

das is a commom bengali last name. Do u know vasundhara das she is a proper tamil brahman but bcause of Das she is also mistaken for bengali it seems. BTW i had a friend with DAS as his first name and he is telugu..
