NBI: Refusal to have sex led to Formaran slay

Refusal to have sex led to a nasty scuffle and to the killing of publicist and entertainment writer Ely Formaran, the National Bureau of Investigation said on Thursday.


After the killing, suspect Eric Alba, 26, a waiter, also took some of the victim’s belongings, including a cellphone, which eventually gave him away.


Alba was arrested on Tuesday by NBI agents in the house of his girlfriend in Sampaloc, Manila, where the NBI traced the cellphone of Formaran which was allegedly given by Alba to her girlfriend as a gift.


Alba was positively identified by Formaran’s househelp and driver during a confrontation at the office of NBI International Police chief Ric Diaz. They said it was Alba who was the last person with the victim on the night of May 25 when Formaran was believed to have been repeatedly stabbed to death.


Alba admitted the crime but said it was prompted by Formaran’s insistence that they have sex that led to a heated argument and later a violent scuffle.


Diaz said they traced the whereabouts of Formaran’s Ericsson T160 cellphone to Deryll Kay Llanes, a resident of Maria Clara Street, in Sampaloc.


Apparently afraid that she might get involved in the case, Llanes reportedly agreed to cooperate with Diaz’s men and told them Alba would be visiting her soon.


When Alba showed up, he was quickly placed under arrest.


Formaran’s houseboy Reynaldo Santiago and driver Froilan Francia claimed they were around when Alba arrived on the night of May 25 and left the following morning with a plastic bag which was later found to be where the stolen items from the victim were placed.


As soon as Alba left the condominium unit of Formaran at the third floor of the Golondrina Townhouse in New Manila, Quezon City, the two were shocked to discover the badly bruised and bloodied body of their employer.


Formaran sustained 14 stab wounds hinting that Alba could have been under the influence of drugs when he killed the victim.


Alba admitted the crime in the presence of his lawyer Allan Jimenez. He was charged with robbery with homicide and may be upgraded to murder should more evidence turn up in the follow up investigation.
