In my opinion, I would choose the Buddhist Indian emperor Ashoka the Great (304-232 BC), who was described by H. G. Wells as the greatest ruler the world has seen. In his earlier life, he was a bloody and ruthless conquerer but after conquering most of Southern Asia, he felt regret for all the bloodshed he caused and wanted to repent. After converting to Buddhism, he established peaceful policies that were rare in the ancient world:

QUOTE

Policy

Emperor Ashoka built thousands of Stupas and Viharas for Buddhist followers (the Ashokavadana says 84,000 such monuments were built). The Stupas of Sanchi are world famous and the stupa named Sanchi Stupa 1 was built by Emperor Ashoka. During the remaining portion of Ashoka's reign, he pursued an official policy of nonviolence or ahimsa. Even the unnecessary slaughter or mutilation of animals was immediately abolished. Wildlife became protected by the king's law against sport hunting and branding. Limited hunting was permitted for consumption reasons but Ashoka also promoted the concept of vegetarianism. Enormous resthouses were built through the empire to house travellers and pilgrims free of charge. Ashoka also showed mercy to those imprisoned, allowing them outside one day each year. He attempted to raise the professional ambition of the common man by building universities for study and water transit and irrigation systems for trade and agriculture. He treated his subjects as equals regardless of their religion, politics and caste. The weaker kingdoms surrounding his, which could so easily be overthrown, were instead made to be well-respected allies. In all these respects, Ashoka far exceeded even modern-day world leaders.

He is acclaimed for constructing hospitals for animals and people alike, and renovating major roads throughout India. Dharmashoka defined the main principles of dharma (dhamma in Pāli) as nonviolence, tolerance of all sects and opinions, obedience to parents, respect for the Brahmins and other religious teachers and priests, liberal towards friends, humane treatment of servants, and generosity towards all. These principles suggest a general ethic of behavior to which no religious or social group could object.

In terms of OUR monarchy, it's not so much what she does that's important, but simply the name and title. You'll have heard of, I presume, (unless you're utterly uneducated) of plenty of great British monarchs, such as Elizabeth 1st, Henry VIII, Richard the Lionheart etc etc. The monarchy today has PLENTY of relevance to this country because it represents all the great kings and queens of the past. That's why the monarchy here will never be destroyed.

God, you're so simple-minded. The monarchy is one of the last few things about our country which commands respect from other nations. Maybe a flea like you doesn't care, but others do, and it makes a lot of difference to our status.

Again, Bixie --- pay attention. I said the term 'monarchy' does not have much relevance in todays world.

Yes, they have a long history and I'm sure the British people are proud. But you know what, presently no one outside of your country cares --- they have no relevance in todays world.

You just don't get it, do you? What do you think is the reason so many tourists come into the country? The monarchy are good money and good for the tourism system. It don't matter if you don't care - it's bringing us status and profit.

Tourism ?--- the world is in the middle of a war and TOURISM is what you're concerned about. Hahahaha

So you're basically saying the current British monarchy is a tourist attraction and nothing else. Hahaha

Why are you going all random? And how is the world in the middle of a war? You got problems sticking to topics - who said I was concerned? I just said that the monarchy is what attracts tourists.

And yes, the monarchy IS a tourist attraction. It's our government which makes the decisions, but the monarchy is just as important, simply by being there. It involves a tiny thing called LOYALTY which I wouldn't expect an american such as yourself to understand seeing how you haven't got one.

This is going offtopic--- but WOW that is the worst thing you can do. How can u NOT acknowledge the soldiers fighting in this war? Regardless, if you are behind the war or not, there are soldiers out there fighting. So selfish.

Last Emperor of Brazil Dom Pedro II. Was a popular emperor who managed to hold Brazil together for 50 yrs. Has he got old he wasn't himself which was when he started to become unpopular with some groups. Was overthrown by a Republican Military coup.

Another more modern King would be Juan Carlos de Borbon. He is the king of Spain. He became king in 1975 after the fall of the military gov't. Supposedly, he saved democracy from being overthrown in 1981 during a coup staged by some military ppl.. The coup collapsed after he went on tv and gave a speech supporting democracy.

I'm impressed though with the freedom (meaning lack of slavery) Thailand historically had. I believe Thailand translates as "land of the free" if I remember correctly?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the British monarchy holds the power to step in and unseat the Prime Minister if the PM is doing something that gravely threatens the life and health of the British people? Also, I believe the British Monarchy heads ultimately the Church of England (Anglican Church: Archbishop of Cantebury aside). Like I said I might be wrong on these things though.

I read a book on him. Interesting guy.

I don't know how true this is... but I heard word of mouth that President Lincoln once said the only person he would trust America to was Dom Pedro II. Sounds a little far fecthed so I'm not sure if that's true.

Well it would be interesting to hear about different monarchs. The only ones I know anything about are the British monarchy and alot of that is through shakespeare. Lol.
