there's nothing wrong with praising Vietnam. but i think some Viets have way too high self esteem and big ego for Vietnam.

Vietnam is nowhere near a being a weathy country, so we cant compare ourselves to China, or Japan, or S Korea and be a big boss around SEA.

so what if Vietnam is doing good in terms of economics in the past 10 years? that doens't mean Vietnam is going to be the future boss of SEA.

les we forget, Vietnam is a communist country, run by corrupted officials, who care for themselves than the people of their country.

les we forget, the majority of the youth in Vietnam today dont give a crap about politics. and they suck in their own Vietnam history. they dont even know who Tran Quoc Tuan is.

so there... i think Viets should look at themselves first before criticizing other SEA countries and try to be their bigger brother.

my little 2 cents

so i think Viets say more than what they can do. that's being an "ugly Viet."

icon_smile.gif

i have no problem with Viets having faith and pride in our country becoming wealthy and modernized. but at least we shouldn't look at other countries around us and feel like a superior to them. that's wrong. we are right now just as poor as them.
Preydominator
A sense of reality is better than fake pride any day. We love Vietnam not because we're the best people of this planet, we're god chosen people, our country is #1. We love Vietnam because because we're Viets and we care for the country and its people.
vipkk

Have your pride as a Viet, at the same time do everything possible to make that pride justified. Learn from other countries/cultures, open your eyes and ears wide to learn from others, and remember you are not the only one who think his/her country is the center of the world. Keep your pride to yourself, and only show it when you have something concrete to back it up.

Considering that "God's Chosen People" got kicked out of their homeland, suffered two thousand years of inhuman treatment at the hands of Europeans, and was almost wiped out 50 years ago, I would urge to reconsider your statement that we are "God's chosen people": if that's what it takes to be "God's Chosen People", I am not volunteering our Vietnamese people. Whoever has that distinction or wants that distinction for themselves can have it, for all I care. We don't need the headache nor the ordeal.
chanoi
I dont care if vietnamese are God chosen people.. being a decendants from Lac Long Quan and Au Co is enough for me. beerchug.gif

Viet Nam is not yet a wealthy country. It is sad to see children walking on the street as beggars, prostitude patrol the street at night, education is failing its students, and corruption. It is much sadder that i see a lot of Viet oversea and inside Viet Nam are lacking what I call "Tinh Than Dan Toc".

Anyway Viet Nam are two separate words, stop typing it as "Vietnam"

thank you so much for slapping some real voiced opionions into these members biggthumpup.gif

please, people will love you more if you're humbled about vietnam's growth, not arrogant about it
TrashCleaner
Vietnamese should not be arrogant. Having pride in being Vietnamese is warranted because we have more than 4 thousand years of cultures. However, when one is so insensitive and crosses the line into making others feel somehow inferior, then i guess it is called arrogance.

It is common to see arrogance from people of different country; the best equipment you could have is knowledge about your own culture and identity.

I'm proud of VietNam because the country is the land of my ancestors, in recent times VietNam may not have achieved much but I can wake up the next day and proudly tell people VietNam is my ancestral homeland.
havythoai
As DAIVIET & TrashCleaner said, we should not be arrogant, but we should admit our faults, then from that point we would fix, which will be a force to help Vietnam develop in the future. I still remember when I was in High school, I was taught such things as "Our Vietnam is a country with rich natural and mineral resources, we should be proud of that...." and a question from my friend which wouldn't fade from my mind is that "If our country has rich natural and mineral resources, so why our country is still poor while Japan doesn't has any resource but they're still rich", this question made my teacher confused a while... Up to now, I realize that in Japan their pupils are taught such things as "our country has no resource except constant volcanoes ... our country lacks this, that and the others ...", they bravely admit their mistakes which they would take as a lift to develop...

I believe the people that have so much pride for Vietnam, love Vietnam for itself. Its that simple. Money, Wealth, and Politcs are all important but it isn't in the minds of the "dirty viets". Those people who you call dirty, love the country for what is it. Its the homeland where our people have struggled so much for and still are struggling today. Its the generations of Viet blood that runs through our veins. Its the ambition and dreams that drive us forward to a better country.

It has nothing to do with superficial things such as money or wealth. It has to do with being unique with ourself and knowing that you can trace your roots back to the motherland, Vietnam.

Everyone or everyone should know that Vietnam is really Viet Nam.But why is it not Viet Namese, we all say or type Vietnamese.Just look above at the title of this Discussion form.
Am I off the point.
TrashCleaner
In Vietnamese, single words are combined together a create a new meaning. The 2 single words can have meanings or no meaning at all, but the combined word could still have a meaning. Vietnamese language doesnt have a long word with so many vowels like english. Vietnam was the reverse of Namviet, which was an old country of which vietnam was a part. That story is probably everywhere so search for it.

You're comparing orange to apple there.

Vietnam is English writing.
and
Viet Nam is Viet writing.

Vietnamese is English writing.
and
Nguoi Viet or Nguoi Viet Nam
is Viet writing. that's why we don't write "Viet Namese" because its neither Viet or English.

Same with Hanoi and Saigon. but yeah...., even in Vietnamese writings, we often see people write Vie^.tnam, Ha`no.i, or Sa`ig`on.

chanoi
I remember when i was in first grade in Viet Nam. The teacher always taught the student to write the name of the country as "Viet Nam". Even in Viet Nam, the people still write the name in English as Viet Nam. So screw the English here or elsewhere, I still write it as Viet Nam.
AsianForum
How come the American dont write "United States" as "UnitedStates", but they write "Viet Nam" as "Vietnam?

Vietnamese language does not use compound word.

I want a simple answer. What is the correct way, not the prefered way. Is it Vietnamese or Viet Namese. Can some scholar or just a linguist expert out there answer this for me.
TrashCleaner
In Vietnamese, it is Việt Nam.
In English, it is Vietnam.

No language expert is needed to tell you that.
