Rang De Basanti is India's entry for Oscar

Indo-Asian News Service

New Delhi, September 25, 2006

Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's blockbuster Rang De Basanti has been selected as India's official entry for the best foreign film category for Oscar Awards 2007.

The film starring Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan and Alice Patten revolves around a young British filmmaker Sue (Patten) who comes to India to make a film on the revolutionaries—Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru—who had left an everlasting impression on her grandfather.

The film depicts the awakening of the young generation, inspired by the legendary freedom fighters.

The producer of the film, the Mumbai-based UTV Software Communications, confirmed the selection.

"It is true that the film is going for the Oscars. Right now we are holding meetings to chalk out plans to promote the film," a UTV spokesperson said.

Rang De Basanti has thus beat Munnabhai Lage Raho and Omkara, among other Oscar contenders, in the race.

The film has also been screened for consideration for nomination at Golden Globe Awards and producer Ronnie Screwala is confident that RDB stands a 'strong chance' at the Oscars.

"I'm delighted that Rang De Basanti has been chosen as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. Such movies come along only once in a generation and we shall make every effort to ensure it is seen by as wide an audience as possible internationally too," Screwala said New Delhi.

He said UTV was already planning a mainline release in the US in association with two major studios.

Rang De is the second Aamir Khan film to be chosen as India's entry to the Oscars. His earlier film Lagaan was sent as India's entry in the Foreign Film category some years ago.

Filmmaker of Indian origin Deepa Mehtas' Water starring John Abraham and Lisa Ray has been chosen as Canada's entry in the same category.

water should go to the oscars and not the one in canada

Omkara should have been selected not bukwaas rang de basanti!

I'm starting to think that the Indian committee that selects movies for the Oscars think that...

Aamir Khan + white people in a movie = greater chance of winning an Oscar.

But I gotta say that Lagaan was a good movie.

What's wrong with Rang De Basanti, I thought it was very good

I was glad RDB is nominated. I would've been really mad if KANK or Krrish took it. I love Omkara but it's an adaptation of Othello so it's a no no for me.

agreed. its more fitting in the oscars than rang de basanti. although i love ar rahman's music.

devdas was submitted in 2002 and oscars rejected it. when u look at the track record of what kind of indian films are chosen for official oscar nominees, its been films like salam bombay, satyajit ray films, and lagaan. water would be excellent coz it explores the controversial subject of sati.

I remember last year there was some movie up in the controversial topic of roman catholic peodophile scandals. It was an interesting piece. It showed how prevalent sex abuse was in the church. And how the heirarchy covered it up. And even made the child victims, seem outcaste in the community. Interesting documentary. It was really sickening and sad! bawling.gif

No....cause Water is a Canadian production. Canada may submit it.

What do you guys think of Corporate? I think good film and message.

oh, I wanted to see that. I don't know if it's good or not. I just read alittle about it, but I'd have to see it to see if it's Oscar material. It would have to be good. I heard Bipasha can't act! sure.gif

If you heard it from a person who don't like Bips, of course you're going to hear that. I'm a Bips fan so of course I don't think so but I know a lot of ppl respected Bips more after this movie and became her fan. So you just have to watch it for yourself cause if you don't like Bips then you're going to think negatively.

No, I actually like Bips. Bengali actresses are my fav. But everyone did slam her for Jism. Did you see that movie? I did! But, even then I thought she had potential, I'm gonna see Corporate to see if she's good. She looks smooth, though. I hope it's good! beerchug.gif

Bips is my fave since her modeling days. Of course ppl are going to talk about her cause she's hot and controversial but Jism was so 2003. This year she got it going on with Omkara and Corporate. I've seen all her movies. My fave movies of her acting are Chehraa, Madhoshi, and Corporate. I'm looking forward to Dhoom 2.
