Last two statements got to go. I'm not afraid of black people unless that person looks threaten like killers (this applies to any one not just black people) and I have pride but don't feel superior to others ('superior' stuff is for racist people).

In this day and age and in New York City, the guy or his compadres pull a gun on you and you are either dead or learning how to compete in the Paralympics, if you are athletically minded.

When it comes to friendship with blacks and Hispanics, you do have to be careful with whom you are dealing with first - the person may be all right but his friends and acquaintances may not. You don't want to step into a store with the guy pulling a gun, and announcing a robbery. If you are in that situation, you are going to need to services of a good lawyer, who gives a $hit about your case. If you don't have such a lwayer and you can't pay for one, then you'll have to think whether you want to accept the District Attorney's plea bargain. Everything I just said also applies to friendship with gangbangers: you have to be on your guard and absolutely, positively make sure that you are nowhere near them when they are about to pull something stupid, which can be on impulse.

She needs to learn how to identify cops. If she is not sure the guy is a real cop and she speaks English, she lets them stand at the door and call 911. If she speaks only Vietnamese, then she needs to call a bilingual acquaintance, friend or relative and ask him or her to call 911. We have had a couple of home invasions involving fake cops in New York City - "Fortunately", the victims were not Vietnamese.

When I was younger my grandma used to tell me stories she read of black theft and homicide in the Vietnamese newspaper.

If we walked down the sidewalk and a black person with baggy clothes, tattoes, and a comb in his bushy hair walked towards us, she would grab my hand and pull me across the street to the opposite sidewalk.

At an intersection with black pedestrians crossing the street, she would double-check to see if the doors are locked.

I used to follow the same precautions I learned from her, but after I stopped living with her my blackphobia slowly faded. Over time I made a few black friends.

But blackphobia persists in the older generations, and it originates in the sexual aggression exhibited by black soldiers brought over by the french during the colonial period.
