Deepa Mehta's Water is Canada's entry for Oscars

MUMBAI: Making use of a new rule governing selection of films, Deepa Mehta's 'Water', starring John Abraham and Lisa Ray, has been chosen as Canada's entry for the 2007 Oscars in the foreign film category.
The film, which depicts the plight of a group of widows in the holy city of Varanasi, could be nominated as Canada's entry to the Oscars because of a change in rule enacted by the governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The new rules state that foreign language film entries no longer need to be in an official language of the country submitting the film. So long as the dominant language is not English, a picture from any country may be in any language or combination of languages. The film is a Canadian production.
The academy's executive director Bruce Davis had stated in July this year that the issue "actually addresses a situation that has cropped up only once before in our history, and may not arise again this century.
