Baguio strings 2.3-km-long ‘longganisa’ chain

BAGUIO CITY -- Amid overcast skies, a 2.3-kilometer-long chain of longganisa (native sausage) was laid out on Session Road here on Saturday in celebration of the Baguio tourism weekend.

With typhoon “Milenyo” (international codename: Xangsane) hitting parts of Northern and Central Luzon on Thursday, organizers said they prayed for good weather so the event would be staged smoothly.

At least 700 volunteers, most of them hotel and restaurant management and tourism students from at least 15 schools in the city and nearby provinces, held the links of sausage links as they looped the chain around the two lanes of Session Road.

The students, who were garbed in white chef suits and toques, entertained the crowd by dancing as street bands played on.

Anthony De Leon, president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB), said the event was not intended to beat the records set by similar events in the Ilocos and Pampanga but to boost tourism in the city.

De Leon said they also wanted to make Baguio’s longganisa popular again.

Paul Alabanza, owner of the Alabanza Meat Store that supplied the sausages, said the actual length of the longganisa chain produced for the event was 4.8 km but only 2.3 km of sausages were laid out on Session Road as they lacked people to hold them.

Nancy Alabanza, the meat store’s co-owner, said they started to produce the sausages on September 19 by slaughtering at least 70 pigs. The 1,440 kilograms of pork produced 7,200 dozens of longganisa for the event.

The recipe included ground pork, garlic, salt, pepper, sugar, and food coloring. As in other native sausages, the mixture was encased in pork intestines.

The longganisa was sold to the public at P30 per dozen and P160 per kg after the event.

“We still make our longganisa with our original recipe and we never use preservatives. Our longganisa is a hit among tourists and residents. Even those who live as far as California [in the United States] continue patronizing our sausages,” Alabanza said.
Among the people who witnessed the event was New Zealand Ambassador David Pine.

Sana sa susunod gawin nilang linggo...ang hirap pumasok sa school kapag nakasara ang Session road.. dun paman din ako araw-araw naglalakad.

Anyway, kudos talaga to Anthony de Leon. he's really working. He should be the governor of the soon to become Cordillera Autonomous Region. Hehehe

As much as I want my mom's native region to become autonomous region, it is likely not going to happen soon because of stupid politicians.

Back to topic: Why is it the Philippines always wanted to be in the Guinness Book of World Records? There's this world record that set by the Philippines (forgot what it is), then another country broke that record, the the Philippines tried to reclaimed the title.

So if another country break this 2.3 kilometer long "longganisa" or sausage, does this mean the Philippines is going to set up another world record to reclaimed the title? icon_confused.gif

Local politicians are revivng the issue.. but I think it will depend on the voters...Through votation kasi ang alam ko.. Taga saan pala mom mo? Benguet? Mountain Province?

The weirder thing there is that we always wanted to have the longest.. longest and biggest barbeque grill, biggest flag; now longest longanisa.

Atok, Benguet. A very nice small town. I always go there when I was still in the Philippines. We even attended wedding there. My cousins even taught me to do "kanao." It was fun.
