Well, we just let people carry whatever flag they want to carry. Let's say Vietnam will play in the World Cup in 2010 in South Africa. Vietnamese in Vietnam who go to the stadium in South Africa can carry the Vietnam flag if they want and the overseas Vietnam who watch the game at the stadium can carry the South Vietnam flag if they want.

For example, if you want to carry the Vietnam flag and another person wants to carry the South Vietnam flag, then both of you can do that. You both can represent.

I think you misunderstand me.

OK, let me explain to you one more time.

Vietnam will play in the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

There will be many Vietnamese in Vietnam and many Vietnamese abroad who will go watch the first 3 games of the first round when Vietnam will play three different teams. Let's say Vietnam will play Spain in the first game, then there will be 3 groups. 1 group of fans will waive the Vietnam flag and 1 group of fans will waive the South Vietnam flag. These two groups are cheering for Vietnam. The third group will be the fans of Spain.

It is kind of complicated but it will be the first time in history of World Cup that we have two groups with two flags cheering for one country. It maybe in the Guiness Book of Records.

I believe all Vietnamese in this world want what is best for Vietnam from both side. And from both side there are people that are misguided and are dividing us. I dream that one day sometime years 2020 over 100,000 oversea return to Vietnam to live.

Oversea Vietnamese have good soccer players as well and when leaders on both sides know how do business with each other, then Vietnam can become better more quickly.

My point is we on both sides need to show tolerance to each other and embrace each other.

I asked my friends this question before and now it's on here, hehe.

For me, I would hold the red flag because everyone knows it represents VN. If there are too many yellow flag wavers surrounding me, I'll just hold a big sign that says "Go Vietnam". Fair enough eh.
vipkk

The scene of people waving the yellow flag in support of Vietnamese players is rather funny, because those players would be officially representing the red flag. Waving a yellow flag in this case is just like supporting players of an invisible, non-existing government. Fanaticism could make people look like fools without them realizing it.

The three stripes flag will die out when the old generation is gone. I doubt American-born Viets (or should i call plainly just American)2nd or 3rd generation will be waving that flag in the future. A dead flag is a dead flag, and a current flag can be change by the people who live in VietNam and who also are the future of VietNam. And young generation in VietNam recognize the red flag as their flags.
VOTAMVOTU
wow didnt expect possitive comments. my only concern is that we need to be united why hold on to the yellow flag when its history already. why let a symbol screw up human relationship.

I would use the flag the world recognise.

we should use the flag that the world recognizes. You don't see catalonians waving their flag at any of spain's matches.

SoCal is mad crazy!

We need to recognize the reality.

The majority of the overseas Vietnamese were originally from South Vietnam and they see South Vietnam flag as their symbol.

You can complain and whine that South Vietnam does not exist anymore; but the true fact is the majority of overseas Vietnamese still love the South Vietnam flag.

I am telling you the way it is. There is no need for me to camouflage the reality and pretend.

Unless we on both sides can tolerate each other's flags, I don't see how reconciliation and forgiveness can work.

As the first step to reconciliation of both sides, we on both sides need accept the status quo of the current situation.

Vietnam flag represents Vietnam and Vietnamese people back home.

South Vietnam flag is in the heart and mind of overseas Vietnamese.

If we on both sides cannot respect and live with this fact, then hatred and divisiveness still exist and it is pulling us back from working together for a better tomorrow.
Kreo
right now there is one VietNam and only 1 flag

You need to be specific there. Which overseas Vietnamese are you talking about? Overseas Vietnamese in the Russian Federation, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, France, U.K, U.S, Canada(strong hold of VC immigrants), Australia?
Let's face it, the yellow flag does not represent the majority of overseas Vietnamese

Not gonna happen b/c VietNam would never make it to World Cup at least not in 2010. Firstly, the soccer players and the fans from VietNam would be furious to see the yellow flag in the stadium. If you guys here were taught to hate communism, contrarily the younger generation in VietNam were also taught to hate that yellow flag. So a violent clash might be a possibility. Secondly, for the security reason the government of the host country would only allow the red flag to be in the stadium since it represent the team and the world-recognized country. One recent example was some sort of asian competition, and some fans brought in the flag of independent Taiwan, and the official (I think it took place in ThaiLand) quickly remove the fans and the flag outside.

Bad idea and scenario when two opposite and long time enemy flag to be at the same place. You think any type of government/host country would be crazy enough to risk it. Their solution would be, yellow flag carrier can carry their flag but have to be outside. If you bring that flag inside the stadium, you're thrown out.

I am talking about the overseas Vietnamese who are currently living in the United States/Canada, Europe, and Australia. icon_smile.gif

This is my educated guess of overseas Vietnamese population in those regions.

United States: 1,500,000
Canada: 250,000
Australia: 250,000
Total: 2,000,000

France: 300,000
Germany: 100,000
UK: 50,000
Other countries in Europe: 50,000
Total in Europe: 500,000

Some people just can not accept the fact those players are representing the red flag, and possibly bringing honor and glory to that flag. They want the yellow flag to have a piece of the pie! what a funny and childish idea!

Waving the yellow flags in a sport event has at least 2 meanings:
1. Insulting and boycotting Vietnamese players.
2. Creating confusion and division to a sport event.

Waving the yellow flags would probably do more harm to national reconciliation and create more divisions between Vietnamese in Vietnam and overseas Viets. There are many ways to promote national healing without resorting to the symbol of a long dead, colonial-era , feudalistic, corrupted, and militaristic regime.

hahahaha... that's a very damn good scenario.

i'd wear the flag that represents the MAJORITY of the Vietnamese, which means 80 million VIETS in VIETNAM.

i wonder what would be the exuse of those VNCH guys when they wear the old VNCH flag.

if they come to represent Vietnam and the Vietnamese athletes at the international games, then it'd be politically correct to wear the real VN flag right?

i think that waving the VNCH flag is like playing the 80s music in the middle of a 21st century party.
