perhaps people from my generation are not fashion conscious...but if u have brothers and sisters in secondary schools...u'll find them spending more money on clothes than on their handphones... embarassedlaugh.gif

Why the fu-k yuck? That's tradition! Do you want that to be taken away? Man seriously you act like a freaking teenager that doesn't care about traditions and always look up on modernity.

yuck isn't appropriate term to be used indeed.. but traditional clothes isn't relevant to the modern lifestyle.. for some, yes but don't pretend that u wear baju melayu all the time!.. u don't need baju melayu to be more melayu than other people..

Glad to see the younger females are not wearing the traditional islamic headdress. Whats the Malaysian custom for that sort of thing? Is it looked down upon?

i have mixed feelings about this.. it is certainly not looked down upon.. nevertheless, in the malay community roughly see a girl wearing 'tudung' as nice, humble and polite.. but that's not really correct.. u can't judge the book by its cover.. sure.gif

I agree, the quiet ones are almost always the freaky one.

It went something like this .... 3 out of 7 Muslim Malay women don't wear headdress (or tudung - as we called it here).

One way or another, we treat 'em the same as other Muslim women who wear headress.

In Malaysia, most Muslim girls often found wearing jeans, t-shirts together with head-coverings. Its normal. However, in KL, anything goes ....

girls who wear tudung with fit short baby t-shirt r pathetic.. thumbsdown.gif doesn't make sense at all.. better don't wear tudung.. i guess most free hair muslim girls think that they will wear tudung when they get old..

The thread isn't about modern lifestyle, it's about street fashion. Traditional clothes can be used as street fashion, you don't really have to wear the whole baju melayu, just the clothes and the pants. I think they're fine and cozy.

Whoever makes a modern, cool and hip incarnation of traditional Malay clothing(including Indonesia and the Philippines) can potentially make alot of money. Fashion, especially international, always changes and loves anything new and I don't think they have done Malay inspired trends yet. They've done boho(Gypsy inspired), some Chinese and some Japanese, and African but no Malayans yet.

I'm not sure about the way it is in KL or other areas in Semenanjung, but here in Kuching and Miri the surfer apparel is currently the 'in'-thing for casual wear. Like Bodyglove, Oreef, Roxy, Quiksilver... you get what I mean. Actually this observation wasn't made by me - it came from Freddy, a Canadian who came during Hari Gawai in July. He also told me that he noticed that Malaysians don't seem to wear sunglasses/shades that much and that the clothes in Malaysia are so different than in Canada...according to him the clothes here are much more colourful and it kinda makes him feel intimidated because he thinks he isn't wearing good enough. embarassedlaugh.gif Was kinda surprised at how I didn't seem to notice those things..especially the surfer apparel part. icon_neutral.gif

In Sibu I see a lot of Ah Lians and Ah Bengs, though.

1. I thought this thread is a bout street fashion. Not modern trend or what urban kids suppose to look like.
2. "Yuck" is not an appropriate expression towards traditional clothes.
3. Headdresses, for muslim woman are not traditional. Its a must for a muslim woman to wear. Its not Malaysian custom or anything. In Islam (for woman), not wearing a headdress is a sin. How can u talk highly about Malaysian dressing @ trend if u don't even know the basic purpose of a muslim headdress, which can be seen all over Malaysia?
