Nāgas in the Mekong

The legend of the Nāga is a strong and sacred belief held by Lao and Thai people living along the Mekong River. Many pay their respects to the river because they believe the Nāga still rule in it, and locals hold an annual sacrifice for the Nāga. Each ceremony depends on how an individual village earns its living from the Mekong River - for instance, through fishing or transport. Local residents believe that the Nāga can protect them from danger, so they are likely to make a sacrifice to Nāga before taking a boat trip along the Mekong River. In some areas, two dead bodies are found in rivers or lakes ever year. The deaths are thought to be caused by Nāgas.

Also, every year on the night of 15th day of 11th month in the Lao lunar calendar at the end of Buddhist Lent (in 2003 it fell on Oct. 10), an extraordinary phenomenon occurs in the area of the Mekong River stretching over 20 kilometres between Pak-Ngeum district, about 80 kilometres south of the Lao capital Vientiane, and Phonephisai district in Nong Khai province, Thailand. Fireballs spew up from the river. Everyone had doubts about this extraordinary occurrence, but later accepted what they knew as facts about the fireball: that it was not staged by humans, but happened naturally. So from then on, villagers on both sides of the river called this phenomenon the Nāga's Fireball. They believe that Nāga under Mekong River shoot the fireball into the air to celebrate the end of Buddhist Lent, because Nāga also meditate during this time.

^You've never heard of the payanak? OMG! lol

IPB Image It's the water dragon that supposedly lives in the Mekong River.

my folks told me about them payanaks in the Mekong river, talkin about how ruthless they are and how they killed 2 of his friend that swam in it during the 60s. icon_neutral.gif at first I thought he was trippin out, but he was mad serious too. I dont believe that we have nagas in the mekong but I do believe that there are spirits in it from refugees trying to escape. Ive heard of stories where people felt hands under the water trying to pull their ankles down and what not. pretty wild.

but lilboy916 if you wanna be different you should get like a landscape type of tatt done. might I suggest get a tatt of the Mekong on your back with the naga dragon and other stuff? The Mekong means a lot to our people and represents life as it flows throughout south east asia.

I don't know about the fish thing.

protocl: It's not just a "Laos dragon", most of the SEA countries use that type of naga.

I also read somewhere else that bad things happened to those soldiers after capturing it. Who knows...lol

Now there are these Bung Fai Payanaks that sometimes pop up from the middle of the Mekong between Nong Khai and Vientiane. There was even a Thai film on this "fictive" phenomenon.
bonkdaddy
I believe the bung fai payanak is a prank pulled by khon Lao on the Thai people - they shoot firecracker like objects into the sky and laugh at all the Thai people who go OOOOOOOO and AAAAAAAA thinking its something that is from another realm. embarassedlaugh.gif

There's something definitely lurking in those waters though - maybe all these thousands of years people saw a huge eel similar to the one the yanks caught and believed it to be a spiritual snake/dragon = payanak.

Some people also think that it's a chemical reaction in the water due to old things in the water or something along that line..lol I want to see it!
Sirikittong
lol payanak. We central thais eat payanaks for lunch!

It's an Oarfish. And I wouldn't be suprised if the Thai/Lao style for the naga was modeled after this fish because it has a little thing sticking out of the tip of it's head as well.
