Reading writings in this thread, I should say that most people in here don't understand the racist problem in Indon. Racist attitudes of Indons toward Chinese came from government officials and military people.

In Indon, leaders/powers are worshipped by majority of people, especially Javanese (majority). It is because the culture of Javanese people is KINGDOM. The Leaders are never wrong. If the leaders (government officials/military people) say that Chinese are bad people, Indons will badly mistreat Chinese. Especially because Indons notice that the government officials/military people mistreat Chinese badly. Besides, if Indons racistly mistreat Chinese, government officials/military people/police don't do anything to stop the mistreatments. It encourage Indons to racistly mistreat Chinese without fear of punishments.

So, the racist problem in Indon is from TOP to BOTTOM.

It comes from Government Officials/Military people TO Indon people.

This is very hilarious, calling Indonesians as "white-worshippers". The fact is, Indonesia actually ethnically-cleansed 200,000 white settlers out of Indonesia in 1957-1958. My father, a small boy in Bandung then, clearly remembers the day military officers from generals to captains went to his then white-dominated neighbourhood of Bandung.

The soldiers simply chose the house they fancied, knocked on the door, told the white inhabitants that "your house is now mine" and gave the whites one week to pack all their belongings and go back to Europe. As result, my father's neighbourhood changed overnight from one dominated by whites into one dominated by soldiers.

What a stupid comment typical from an uneducated cockroach-boy.

Fact is, the racial problems during Suharto era stemmed from the special treatment received by ethnic-Chinese cronies of Suharto in the economy. In New Order Indonesia, the situation is the complete opposite of what happen in Malaysia. It was the ethnic-Chinese cronies who received protection and government subsidies in the economic sphere, while it was made difficult for native Indonesians to compete, since rich Chinese-Indonesians posed no political threat to Suharto, while rich natives would pose such as threat. In fact, the few native conglomerates from the Suharto period were either his friends or family that he could trust.

The native people were angry since they felt they were being economically "colonised" in their own land. Nowadays, the crappy racial cronyism system promoted by Suharto, the underlying cause of racial problems, is gone. Hence anti-Chinese racial animosity is basically history, particularly since most Chinese-Indonesians speak and act like other Indonesians. It is clear only equal treatment regardless of ethnic background is the key to create racial harmony.

Another kindly reminder, please discuss the topic without making personal attacks.

Well, if u trust everything in the internet, apparently, u're a fool.

Like what purnomor has already explained, we've driven away the whites from our country since a long time a go. And not only the people, even their buildings too. And although now we're calmer and friendlier, our hesitation towards the west has been recorded throughout the history, the resistance toward the western dominance is harder here than any other south East Asian country, even Malaysia.

Pls do not spill oil in a flaming fire, especially if u know nothing about Indonesia.

haha i live in france and i think there are quite a lot of racist ppl in france (french people or foreigners)... i guess only ppl who really suffers from racism can talk about it and usually as we say in french, [there is no smoke without fire], and don't forget that usually u will never entirely know a ppl in 5 minutes or even a month, especially if u don't understand their language or if u are not one of them... but i dunno about indonesia yet.

Many are, many are not; like most areas in the world. No point in debating which group is larger, that will only deepen the wound.

So! In currentely the Indonesian country is influented by the China policy, isnt? Which means the China demand on it!!

Just because you read stuff on the internet that doesn't mean you can make statements about things you don't even know.

There is really no point of asking are Indonesians racist because in every nation, there are racists! Racism is not a culture!

Saying Indonesia is not ECONOMICALLY rich is right, but saying Indonesia is not rich as a whole is just dumb because we've got more natural resources than many other countries in Asia! It's just that the government does not use them the right way. Where are you from anyway? I was expecting you were somewhere from Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos because that'd be funny if you say Indonesia's not rich.

i think racism happen everywhere in every country...it's common thing..

but i have to admit that i don't like it if I have to suffer from racism in my own country where i was born there, i grew up there, even speak and live like the native...

You have definitely hit the spot there, that it is corruption and greed that has destroyed our country (not only our country I may add, but many others). But it is important to specifically define whose corruption and greed that has caused this misery. Is it the greed of the poor working people? No. They are the victims of greed and corruption. It is the greed of the system, that is capitalist system. Poverty causes people to act desperately (for example, 1998 Riot in Indonesia, Rwanda massacre, etc), and capitalism is the root cause of poverty. No matter how much we want to believe, or made to believe, that capitalism will do good for everybody, it is a bunch of non-sense. I myself come from a business family, and I learn this firsthand from my family that the only way to make money is to make your workers desperate (ie. poor) so that they will work for low wages, and from there you make your profit. Lower wages mean more profit, that is the basic tenet of capitalism, everything in the name of profit.

A fight againts racism should start with the fight against capitalism.
