there is racism everywhere!! i have noticed it in most cultures and nations.. here there and everywhere.. it's really sad. hopefully there will come a time where we get beyond the blackness of our skin, size of our eyes, curliness of our hair, shortness of our torsos etc etc.. seriously who cares!!! my solution to racism is inter-racial marriages!!

This is what a typical Indonesian racist is... "weird"... don't you think yourself is weird? If you go to a European country and act like that, people are seriously gonna beat you up.

To have fun?
My @$$, have you got a damn life? Making fun of people just to have fun? How immature, how typical.

Yeah, it'd be weird, but they're not gonna beat them up, they'll prolly just think it's weird or feel sorry for the people coming from developing countries. icon_sad.gif

Many Indonesians do that though shifty.gif

Shino, it means
you, indonesians and i are all racist donk???
how scary!
i think you must put some limit for the word "racist"
ga mau kan disebut rasis?
Ara
Uhm, to be a racist, one must discriminate on the base of race, feeling that their particular race is superior to others. Being an Indonesian is not being a member of a race. Being an Indonesian is having a citizenship to the country.

Also, there are many ethnic Chinese who are Indonesian. So, are there Indonesians who feel their race are superior to others? Of course there are.

So, let's go back to the original questions, are Indonesians racist? Do we really know? Unfortunately there are discriminatory legislations against our fellow brothers. But to answer your question, yes and no. There is no definitive answer to the question. There are Indonesians, no matter what their ethnicities are, that is racist. Then there is also vice versa, Indonesians who are not racist. We are just like every other nation. Nothing more, nothing less.
Bohemian
I agree with Ara, there're racists WHEREVER you go, guys!! The diversity we've got at home is a BLESSING not a CURSE!!!

Indonesian main problem is not diversity, but CORRUPTION. GREED is the only thing to tear the lovely country and people apart!! In fact, to me, greed is all behind the fundamentalism, and all the bad things that can come up to your minds about Indonesia nowadays.

Come on Indonesians, WAKE UP!!! BANGUN!!!

I don't think so, many Italian are racist towards the Gysies, but it doesn't mean that they envy the nomadic, haphazard, begging-around, stealing, mystical life that they lead.

XxRyoChanxX said : "I think all countries has ppl who are racist"
Of course they do!!

Thats why when I talk about people from other countries, I'll try and remember to always put "some" or most". That way people can't point the finger and cry "racist" - well in most cases anyway!
lackor
I think indonesia has probably less racists this is because indonesians are 90 percent muslim and muslims are not racist. not the ones that practice islam.

On a more important note, I really wish the indonesian nation could somehow become a more richer nation. Because the people are so nice they deserve to have wealth.
testcubaanujian
i think they have high PATRIOTISM in their heart!!!!!

MAJU TERUS PANTANG MUNDUR!!

All Indonesians have their own individual or ethnic prejudices...

But the funny thing is... by calling Indonesians Racist in itself a racist comment... Or maybe just plain ignorant about Indonesia.

yes yes patriotism, very much so. good word.

MOST Indonesians are racist. Believe me, I am also an Indonesian but I'm not THAT racist like the people in Indonesia. Wait, don't flame me first. Indonesians like to divide races, for example, if a Black man is walking down the street, many Indonesians will just call them "NEGRO NEGRO NEGRO!! Wahahah gila ada negro disini paraaah, woiii item! woiii!!", or maybe a white man, "buleeee woi bule depok!! kagak bisa bahasa indonesia yah? i lop yu daaah!!", or maybe an indian man "oi nehi nehi lo! nehi nehi!"... yep, many Indonesians are like that and its really really annoying when Indos see me hanging around with the blacks or indians, theyll just say "idih ngapain sih lo temenan ma orang ITEM?", it ticks me off so bad! I mean, why the hell!! I can hang out with ANYONE I want! indonesians are STEREOTIPICAL! They say Indian people are smelly, but if they can smell their own smell, theyll faint like hell! They say blacks are so bad and so dumb and stuff like that, but they listen to RnB and Hip Hop, how idiotic...... They hate the chinese so damn much just because theyre jealous... Man, I wish Indos start thinking further....

NO offence for Indonesian racists, this is not an offence, this is a damn fact, I'm dissing you like hell dude...
*

hehhee i can almost understand that. Item means dark in filo, im guessing its the same in indonesian too?

So there are some indonesian racists. I wouldnt say its common . I definetely think that theres more tolerance towards difference skin tones in indonesian. There has to be because basically indonesians are different skin tones so when that happens there is more interaction and cooperation between the peoples. Its different in europe where the native people are all one colour. In indonesian the native people are all kinds of colours.

To be racist is not part of the faith but then there are some people even in the most populour islamic nation on earth who dont follow faith properly or are hypocrites. To find fault with gods creation is blasphemy. We should never criticize another persons skin colour or features because that is exactly the way god wanted them to be made. If you criticize them then you're saying to god, i dont think you did a good job making that guy that colour. Because god is the almighty he knows everything, hes created everything perfect. He created the science, perfect, the mathematics, perfect, Theres not one thing he hasnt created that doesnt have a function in this world. All the animals have their place and all the natural organisms have their place. And as human beings we're all endowed with intelligence, reasoning skills and logic. Whether we choose to use them as in the case with this indonesian is up to us. We can make this world a better world or a worser world. To be nasty is an empty negative and destructive way of expressing ourselves. Always remember your purpose on this earth is to seek the pleasure of god and not the pleasure of man.

People always like to find the differences.
They must have one, otherwsie they can't find a scape goat.
Ex. Between Melayu and Melayu (Malay).
When problem come, one will curse each other using like Damn Javanese or Damn Batak.

(I don't like the term "Pribumi" or "BumiPutra". This is a "Discrimanation Terms").
Don't you think so?

ok..to be honest..we have to face the fact that all the people always have racist side in their mind....indonesian can be said a bit racist although not all ( only the one with simple mind)...if Indonesian is not racist why there are still different status ?
WNIketurunan and WNI.....eventough the goverment said that it will be erased..there are no further movement...because of this status..it looks like there is a wide different between this 2 race...

People stop pointing the finger at different races and calling them racist, when your that one individual who is really the racist one... sure.gif

Hmm this IS so fustrating, in a way and hard to resolve! I think Indonesians in general tend to seperate people eg. bule, but not in a bad way at all. They love having people from other places and get a tad excited, therefore call out. lol i think the indonesian people are so naive, innocent and simply 'desooooo'! hahaha in such a nice way biggrin.gif i love it, and indonesia

everybody is different. different or not different one will always look for the differences. Discrimination does happen everwhere.
Read this:
On Sinar Harapan Daily, 12 October 2004. Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, expressed the following remarks:
The Jakarta daily Sinar Harapan this week quoted Jusuf saying he was considering changes on lending policies that would lower the interest rates on loans to a group overwhelmingly comprised (by his own admission up to 95%) of indigenious Indonesian businessmen.
Jusuf claims that the policy will level the business playing field and reduce the amount of discrimination directed at the nation's tiny ethnic Chinese community.
When asked whether the policy was discriminatory, he replied: " Would you (Indonesian Chinese) choose to be discriminated or you prefer to be burned and hunted down?"
Actualight
However, this topic can't have an end. Like I mentioned b4. Discriminatin does happen everywhere and to anybody. even at home.
It's acceptable for me, as long as long it's not a BLOODY one.

I don't know anywherelse but in France, people seem to have a positive vision to indonesian and think that the indonesian people has in general a great sense of hospitality and welcome, it even has become one of the main attractiveness for people who visit indonesia : the legendary kindness of the indonesians, the permanent smile on their face... I don't invent it !!
So you guy don't have the right to say that indonesia is the most racist nation in the world. No nation is.

RockHeart,
:genius:

if they are the most racist, how come there are a lot of chinese, indian and arab community in indonesia. the country which the most chinese descent in the world is indonesia. can you tell me how is it come into your mind that dumb thinking?

What about South Africa just 20 years ago?

Tell us directly that Indonesia is not the most racist by pointing out another country which has more blatant discrimination laws against minorities. Please. Your honesty is greatly appreciated.
IBC
(Think about it) It doesn't matters if peoples are little bit racist deep in their heart, I think everyone DO HAVE some racial issues but it isn't a problems as long as it didn't reflect in their act however in Indonesia the worst part of the racial problem are the GOVERMENT, LEADERS they should not make racial statement.
remember when Indonesian Vice President Hamzah Haz said during election that when elected he will wipe out chinese-indonesian domination on economy in Indonesia that Indonesia Pribumi should dominate economically.. that's a shame as long as it's bussiness is legal who's on top shouldn't matters, and remember chinese-indonesian are patriotic too who's put Indonesian interest on top they fled only when feel threathen like when riots occurs on on May tragedy
and remember too that some members of Indonesian Independence Party are Indonesian-chinese, and they do struggle on Independence from Netherland and Japanese Invasion
but these fact are ruled out from Indonesia history lesson on school, in fact in education facility own by government they make sure that young pribumi see chinese-indonesian as some sort of parasite

not all of chinese-indonesian are "angel" during Netherland or Japanese occupation but there's a lot of pribumi traitors too even Indonesian second president Soeharto in fact join Indonesian Netherland Corps
when he is young.. this is caused of unsure and insecureness in that time

see wikipedia for "chinese indonesian" for further details

What I'm trying to say is goverment policies from comunist fear era till now are based on racist though
and that's should change... because when all indonesian-born race are fought and stand in one nation not based on race or religion Indonesian could be a great nation..

The race issue, it's a very tiring and pointless issue (not to say that I want to avoid the isssue, on the contrary, it must be dealt with head on. It is pointless in the sense that people seem to worry too much about race while it really is not something to be taken into for any considerations). There are racist remarks everywhere, I agree with that, due arrogance and ignorance. But to generalize an entire society is not solving the problem. Instead, it creates a breeding ground for more arrogance and ignorance. So, in conclusion, YES there are some racial problems in indonesia, but I DISAGREE with the idea that Indonesians are generally racist.

just an additional comment (somewhat irrelevant with the thread): I think racial distinction and classification will probably be pointless eventually (it's even vague now, like for example, when filling out forms in the US, there is usually a question about racial identitiy, now Middle Easterns are Asians but there is a different slot, and what about the mix? the is a place for 'other' but that just seem like they're some kind of alien species). We will inevitably continue to mix with one another and 'create' more diverse races. Humans were created with diversity so that they may learn from each other and create harmony on this Earth of ours.....just a thought....

i think Indonesian people are used to be having a racist mentality..because since the dutch invasion to our country, they try to make a class to differentiate indonesian people based on economic condition..

Well, it will be a very hard job to erase this kind of mentality..on the fact this ongoing situation is supported by ourself..start from now, let do the job from ourself first..maybe in the future...

Can i just say that Indo's are really great people ..most are very accepting, friendly and happy go lucky...( i still remember Jakarta in 1989 up to the riot time) i fondly look forward to go back on my yearly trips. the problem is...lack of education...and combine with the jet fuel, of propoganda, political infighting, groups that incite violence...what you get is really confused people who has grown to be so different from what they really are. why is Jakarta so bad ( comparatively speaking)? i think ppl in the villages are not able to get jobs in their desa...they come to city in hope to make money...they get to Jkt and realise it's actually very hard to get by in the big city. at the point of almost dying from hunger they decide they will steal rob, maybe initally to get by...eventually becomes a habit. the govt should tink of an initiative to set up industries in the desa and not only concentrate in big cities...( for those who said they have done so..i'll intro another part into the equation...'corruption"...if they are doing so..why are ppl still without jobs and coming to JKT and other big cities in drones???)

Indonesia is a very very rich country ( resource wise) it has the resources to become one of the most developed countries in the world..if managed corectly...but it couldn't be more than a pipe dream now...i wish i live to see indo great again..( maybe like the majapahit era??)

BTW i think i'm might be a bit off tangeant to this thread...oh well...the wandering mind strikes again..
