Big shows right NOW? Well, the Death Note anime series just started few days ago, so many people are interested in that. Maybe the D.Gray-man also. Kanon remake is probably more for romance-lovers.

From just-concluded series, the Higurashi no Naku koroni (suspense/horror?) and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (school comedy, more or less) was a big hit, riding on popular games and novels respectively.

I think shounen series Bleach, Naruto, and One-Piece is still going strong? Though I've long given up on the first two and never watched the third. They're all very popular.

Samurai/Comedy/action

some drama like NOw and than here and there

Try Samurai 7 (licensed, but should still have bittorrent around), which is pretty much based on the Seven Samurai story with futuristic setting. Better than it sounds. Samurai Champloo is also another show you might like. Bit funky, but has a nice mix of comedy and action.
