HA NOI — The Government will do its best to promote relations between women from Viet Nam and Cambodia to strengthen bilateral ties, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday to Ing Kantha Phavy, Cambodian Minister of Women’s Affairs.
Dung called on the women’s associations of both countries to strengthen exchanges and experiences in education, healthcare, women and child trafficking and preventing social evils.
The Prime Minister asked the Cambodian ministry together with Viet Nam National Committee for the Advancement of Women to discuss measures for further cooperation between the women of the two countries, particularly in provinces sharing the border, where many Khmer people reside. This would benefit women and people of both countries, Dung said.
The Cambodian minister said the Cambodian women were eager to cooperate with Vietnamese women in poverty alleviation, hunger eradication and for increasing their role and position in the society.
She asked the two governments to facilitate conditions for women’s organisations to have regular exchanges and provide more information for furthering mutual understanding and co-operation.
Women’s issues
Chairwoman of the Viet Nam Women’s Union Ha Thi Khiet yesterday told Ing Kantha Phavy, the Cambodian Minister for Women’s Affairs, that Vietnamese women wanted to strengthen co-operation with Cambodian women in alleviating poverty, eradicating hunger, preventing trafficking in women and children, and for the advancement of women from both countries.
Khiet informed the Cambodian delegation of the traditions and contributions made by Vietnamese women in their fight for emancipation.
Khiet said the Vietnamese women, who account for half the population, represented half the work force in all areas in the country and held more and more important positions in the society.
Vietnamese women represent 27.3 per cent of the National Assembly deputies, ranking first in Asia. The plan of action for the advancement of women comprises five targets representing gender equality in labour, jobs, education, healthcare, leadership and management.
The Cambodian minister hailed Vietnamese counterparts for their traditions of heroism, creativeness and loyalty.
She said the Cambodian women have made great contributions for national construction and was ready to cooperate with Vietnamese women in hunger eradication and poverty alleviation.
She asked the Vietnamese Women’s Union to closely coordinate with other countries in the region to prevent trafficking in women and children. — VNS
