I.B.M. Division Moves to China

I.B.M. has moved its global procurement headquarters to southern China from the suburbs of New York City to “capitalize on emerging market opportunities.”

I.B.M., based in Armonk, N.Y., spends 30 percent of its $40 billion annual procurement in Asia, the company said in a statement yesterday, confirming the move to Shenzhen that was first announced to suppliers in May. This is the first time that I.B.M., the world’s biggest computer services company, has moved the headquarters of one of its largest divisions to China.

Companies like I.B.M. and Microsoft are expanding in China to take advantage of lower costs and to gain market share in the world’s most populous nation.

The chief procurement officer for I.B.M., John Paterson, relocated from Somers, N.Y., and started work in Shenzhen yesterday, said Amanda Garland, an I.B.M. spokeswoman.

Demand for software and services across Asia is growing, and the company wants to develop new markets and suppliers to meet the demand, I.B.M. said.

to silence the american politicians, who were against this buyout

China should have bought their super computer deep blue instead of their PC division, i don't see much people buying brand PCs anymore, the last one i've bought was 13 years ago. :/

Lenova has an American (white male) CEO now. I suspect it is a stipulation for Americans to allow Chinese to buy IBM PC. It's just an all-around rotten deal for Chinese even though it was Chinese who paid the money to save IBM PC.

Anyway, Lenova has ceased to be a Chinese company -- I look at it as a typical American company with white men in charge and a lot of Asians working for the white men in charge.

Company doesn't belong to CEO or management staff. Lenovo is a Chinese company.

^ But the CEO and management staff run the company.

But yeah, the owners (i.e., shareholders) are still mostly Chinese.

And CEOs in America do not always act in the best interest of the owners -- made evident by how CEOs give themselves HUGE paychecks, bonuses, golden parachuttes and all sort of huge benefits that they don't deserve.

IBM sold thier PC devision to china because it sucks and can't make profit. There is no way that IBM is gona sell their server and super computer division where they make tons of money...especially the server one.

why is a white dude running a chinese company?? wtf usa wont allow us to run their oil company and chinese people allow a white ceo?

You are correct. Lenovo buying the ibm pc division actually did not benefit Lenovo.

I have to blame it on the mainland Chinese. When the Chinese banks were trying to make a turn around, they all wanted WHITE foreingers to run the banks, ie. to be upper management. There are many skilled Chinese bankers from Singapore, Canada and the US, but they still wanted white managers. They could just look for Chinese managers from HK and Taiwan.

Who would respect you if you don't respect yourself first?

This is a pity for all asians. I feel most of them have less confidence.
Asian go to USA or europe and start to work for nothing to build other countries...but for their own country they take foreigners with expatriate salaries and huge benefits.

This has changed somehow in HK after 1997, but still most of the top companies have Guilows.

CEO requires skills and connections. Skin color doesn't matter. No racism here, okay? A white CEO is fine to me. I think white managers have better connections and better understanding in the US market than Chinese managers.
