Luanda

An assembling plant of bicycles from the Vietnamese industry might be opened in Angola, in mid 2007, in a USD 3.5 million investment, a partnership between local businessmen and of that Asian country.

Speaking to ANGOP in the light of the business forum of Angolan and Vietnamese investors, held this Friday in Luanda, the Ambassador of Vietnam to Angola, Nguyen Dinh stressed that the bicycles factory will be located in the southern region of the capital and expects to employ over 100 workers.

Still in the ambit of investments, the Vietnamese Ambassador said that businessmen from his country also want to invest in the sectors of tourism and civil engineering, with the construction of hotels, leisure locations and setting up factories of materials for building housing and road infrastructures.

With an annual business volume of about 50 million dollars in Angola, Vietnam mainly exports rice to the country, reaching over 40,000 tonnes.

Africa is one huge continent. By opening a factory in Angola, Vietnam hopes to export bicyles and later motorcycles to the rest of Africa. icon_smile.gif

it is called diversifying the investment, a company doesnt want to just put all the eggs in one basket, when you diversify you lower the risk biggrin.gif

The Angolans make money, they can afford to buy our rice and other products. I think that Vietnam is trying to move up from exporting commodity agricultural products, and needs customers to buy her newer products. I see this plant investment, partially as a gesture to generate some customer good will.

Africa is such a beautiful continent. I hope that Africa will become peaceful and prosperous in the future.

Two answers:

First, Africa is a potential market for bicycles and other low technology products that Vietnam can compete with others.

Second, Vietnam bicycles export has been hit hard by anti-dump rule in Canada, Europe and South America. Move production oversea is a good strategy to regain those makets.
